"Lupin the Third '79" is a song composed by Yuji Ohno and performed by You & Explosion Band.[1] It was used as the third opening theme of the Lupin the 3rd Part 2. This is the first arrangement of the original '78 version.
Opening[]
The opening starts with the Lupin's Gang and Fujiko Mine playing pool. After the title screen is showed, Lupin III alone runs with Inspector Zenigata behind him, breaks a window by jumping through, and gets in his car. After some maneuver to go on the main route, he escaped with his Benz SSK from Inspector Zenigata. Then, we have an introduction to Lupin's Gang.
Daisuke Jigen peacefully eats a bunch of grapes in some desert. By sensing danger, he throws his grapes in the air, fires two shots to neutralize two of his aggressors, and grabs back his grapes. Then, we have Fujiko Mine dancing to the music. After that, we have Goemon Ishikawa XIII in some meditation in a traditional Japanese house. Like Jigen, he instinctively cut a partition to kill an enemy who was hidden behind it.
The introductions are finished and we have the Lupin's Gang and Mine Fujiko escaping from Zenigata. In the next frame, Fujiko turns around in slow motion to look behind her with her hair floating in the air.
The opening concludes with a frame of Lupin III and Fujiko against a wall in a little tunnel.

Composition[]
According to the Japanese Wikipedia,[2] the principal melody is played by a synthesizer and an electric drum is used along the music. We can denote two differences with the original '78 version: the sax plays the section of the strings and vice versa and the use of an acoustic guitar where an electric one was used in the original version.
The musical performance between the original TV size and the full version differs in the fact that the first one was recording in monaural at the beginning. With the episode 99 and 103 (= episode 43 and 52 of season 3) being the first stereo broadcast in the history of Japanese animation, a stereo TV size was only produced at this time by editing the full version and adding sound effects.
There are various bridge versions with monaural recordings, and they are often used in TV specials and movie trailers.
