Lupin III Wiki

"Lupin the Third '80" is a song composed by Yuji Ohno and performed by You & Explosion Band.[1] It was used as the fourth and last opening theme of the Lupin the 3rd Part 2. This is the second arrangement of the original '78 version.

Opening[]

This third opening doesn't have a real continuity as well as the second opening. It has little playlets to resume the five main protagonists of the series.

The opening starts with Lupin III getting out of his car which explodes a few moments after. After trying to break into a safe, he is captured by the Inspector Koichi Zenigata but Lupin plays him a little trick and evades.

After that, we have a small introduction of the Lupin Gang. Daisuke Jigen is calmly smoking his cigarette and Goemon Ishikawa XIII, wearing a kabuki costume, cuts twice the screen. To finish it, there are little scenes where the Lupin Gang drives the Mercedes SSK, and gets out a plane with Fujiko Mine.

Fujiko is then introduced wearing multiple outfits, dancing with a loose dress, and also a short outfit with an Afro hairstyle and driving a motorcycle. Next, we see Lupin, Fujiko, and Jigen playing with their character glove puppets and trying to escape from Zenigata who has also his puppet. In the next frame, Fujiko is reloading her gun with lipstick and shoots on the title screen.

The opening ends with a static image of Zenigata and the police, Jigen, Goemon with his Zantetsuken, Fujiko and Lupin.

Composition[]

According to the Japanese Wikipedia,[2] this version is some kind of big band jazz-style arrangement with vibraphone playing the melody and trumpet added everywhere.

Portion of the full version of this song was used in the second movie "The Castle of Cagliostro" two times during the car chase and one time in the second half of the movie.

"Lupin the Third '80" was first used in Part 2 Episode 103 as a background music without voices.

Notes[]

  • This is the first opening where the name of "Lupin" is clearly written in English.
  • In comparison with the first three opening, the animation to complete the katakana "ン" of the title screen is different. In this opening it's not a bullet but a lipstick and it's coming from the left. Also this title screen is showed at the end of the opening.
