The Skateboard Murder Mystery is the 72nd episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.
Synopsis[]
Ellery Queen, the owner of the legendary sapphire called "The Eye of Solomon," is also the owner of a football team. Lupin, coming for the sapphire as announced, discovers Queen on the brink of death. Someone has attacked him and The Eye of Solomon is gone! Who is the real culprit, and will Lupin be able to get his hands on the missing sapphire?!

Get dialogue from the police officer and Zenigata from the Italian dub
Due to the l/r translation issues in Japanese, and the fact that Bolumco was out of the question, the detective is known as either Bolonco or Boronco, the latter also Boronko when transliterated from Japanese. The English subtitles and the English dub call him Boronco as well as the Italian Blu-ray that used the English Geneon translation as a base while Bolonco was used as the English spelling on a Japanese VHS tape, the Italian dub and Lupin III DVD Collection Vol. 24.[1]
The name Ellery Queen was given in the Italian dub and Ellery A. Queen in the English dub however in the Japanese original, his name was Mr. Queen throughout the episode.
In the original Japanese version, Zenigata and the blonde female police officer speak in English with Japanese subtitles. This was altered in the English dub to not match the subtitles at all. While in the Italian airing, this was dubbed and rewritten but depends on the sources. On the TV airings, the subtitles remain due to that they are baked into the master however the DVD uses a different creditless master than any other version. The Discotek DVD and the Italian Blu-ray reverted back to Japanese however for the latter unlike most dialogue that Zenigata speaks in English kept in English, it was translated into Italian on the subtitles. Also the English subtitles provided on the DVDs and streaming services do not match the dialogue exactly.

Some of the plot in the English dub was simplified.
The Eye of Solomon/Solomon's Eye is mentioned less in the dub. When Bolonco introduces himself to Zenigata, he deduces that Lupin is after the sapphire while the English dub doesn't mention this at all. Mr. Queen doesn't mention it to George and also doesn't mention that it came from Jerusalem. When the Chief of Police informs Zenigata that Lupin's arrested, both Zenigata and the chief mention the Eye of Solomon however in the English dub, only Zenigata mentions a "sapphire".
The Red Eagles, the team that George plays for was also mentioned less. Jigen, Bolonco outside of the reading of the will and the representative do not mention the team in the English dub.
Bolonco mentions the two police cars as Car 10 and 12, this was dropped in the English dub.
In the original version; Bolonco and the Lupin gang were off to the Grand Prix League. This is simplified in the English dub as the "football game". For the Italian dub, it was rewritten as "rugby" due to lack of awareness of American football in Italy, but only Lupin and Jigen mention it and not Bolonco.
In the Italian dub, Lupin and Jigen chant "Ambarabà cicì cocò ", an Italian nursery rhyme, as they push the pieces of the truck apart.

- 22:40-22:43 / 22:50-23:01 - The road is literally a sketch with lines as the animation is not finished.

- This was the first episode and the second project animated by Telecom after Lupin VS the Clone however since the results were considered poor, Yasuo Otsuka had to reanimate most of the episode.[2] After this episode, Yasuo Otsuka decided to hire Atsuko Tanaka who was part of Shin-Ei (formerly A Production where he worked at), Nobuo Tomizawa and Masako Shinohara from Nippon Animation (who did Future Boy Conan with Hayao Miyazaki) and two main Oh! Production animators Tsukasa Tannai and Kazuhide Tomonaga for future episodes.
- Due to Yasuo Otsuka being involved, this was the first episode that featured character designs that were later evolved into the designs used in Part 2 Episode 99 and The Castle of Cagliostro:
- Lupin has his longer face design in selected scenes such as 12:26, 12:50-12:52, 12:52-12:53. 20:36-20:37 also has the large pupils used in Episode 99 while 22:49-22:50 as the facial expression later used in The Castle of Cagliostro.
- 6:50-6:55 / 12:55-12:58 / 15:36-15:38 / 22:03-22:05 - Jigen has a smaller nose compared to the standard Part 2 design, but his mouth is the same size unlike Episode 99.
- 13:31 - Both Lupin and Jigen have the designs mentioned above when they turned their heads.
- 20:52-20:54 / 21:50-21:53 / Zenigata's character design.
- Among other character design changes, Zenigata now resembles Captain Dyce from Miyazaki's Future Boy Conan more closely than ever. Bolonco also resembles the title character of that series, even sharing the same voice actress, Noriko Ohara.
- Ellery Queen is named after both a fictional detective and as the writer pseudonym for Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee.
- Bolonco later inspired Detective Conan as they are both kid detectives who use skateboards, he also got a cameo appearance in Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie.
- TMS no longer has the original audio master for this episode due to that the audio quality is poorer than the rest of the episodes on DVD and Blu-ray releases and suffers from audio clipping. The music and sound effects track was kept meaning that the later English, Spanish Animax and Valencian dubs were in higher audio quality.
- Noriko Ohara (Bolonco) would voice Miss Bianca in the Japanese dub of The Rescuers alongside Yasuo Yamada as Bernard in 1981.
- Jigen asks Lupin if he could possibly have killed Mr. Queen. Lupin defensively asks why he would do something like that. While he generally refuses to hurt the innocent, he did hang three guards with wire while performing a heist in Part 1 Episode 4, even though he did insist to himself he wouldn't kill them.
- In the English dub, Zenigata facetiously asks Bolonco if he's "ready to eat crow". Lupin did exactly that, raw, in Part III Episode 13.
