Translation Notes[]

Due to lack of awareness of the manga, the English synopsis decided to translate the character as Mother while the English subtitles that appeared on UTB Hollywood and Crunchyroll translated the character as Mommy and the Union as the Syndicate. This was corrected when Mama reappeared in Part 5 Episode 3.

In the Italian TV airings, it runs at roughly 17 minutes with the intro rather than the full 24 minutes 30 seconds of the original Japanese version. Even with the intro, title card, eyecatches, next episode preview and credits removed, roughly 5 minutes of the episode has been removed including important plotlines:

  • Lupin going near Mama's breasts to steal the real ruby ring.
  • Jigen taking out a cigarette from a packet of Marlboro reds. [?]
  • The gangster removing his revolver from his pocket, the two goons getting shot as Jigen makes a dramatic pose. In the Italian airing, it jump cuts towards where all three are up from the floor off to the elevator.
  • Lupin kissing on a pillow dreaming of Fujiko-chan.
  • Lupin jumping onto the bed where Fujiko lies.
  • Fujiko biting on Lupin's hand.

The scene where Lupin is on the upside down cross was heavily cut due to religious reasons, what was left in is as follows:

  • The pyramid on the floor lighting up and Lupin being on the cross is completely cut out with the first thing after Lupin talking to Mama is Jigen firing from his gun the first time around.
  • Shortly after the scene where Jigen shoots the chandelier, Goemon cutting up the cultists and freeing Lupin from the cross were also removed meaning that the first thing in the Italian airing after Jigen firing the gun is Lupin running away from the broken cross due to gunfire from the cultists.

Notes[]

  • This was the first episode to be dubbed into Italian and Spanish. In Italian TV airings on Mediaset channels where it was aired since 1987, this is the first episode instead of Part III Episode 1.
  • The episode was a very loose adaptation of the New Lupin III (Manga) chapter Union Mama as outside of the character names Mama and Lucky, Mama running the Union as well as Fujiko working for her, the manga chapter and the episode are different.
  • According to Japanese Wikipedia and Unikaze, this was the final role of Michiko Hirai since she had died from acute heart failure 4 days before airing.[2]
  • One of the sculptures in Mama's yard is of a wolf teat-feeding the legendary Roman twins, Romulus and Remus.
