Rie Makita (牧田 リエ, Makita Rie) is a character of Lupin the 3rd Part 1.
History[]
Rie Makita is the daughter of former thief Ken Makita who retired to live with her but he never told her about his past, she also cooks for him. There are two things that she does not like, liars and thieves.
George Takigawa wanted to use her father to do a job however since he refused, George claimed Rie to be her uncle and he groomed her. Ken asked Lupin III who was the son of his former deceased partner Lupin II to get her back with the help of Daisuke Jigen.
At George's ranch, she was horse riding and was enjoying herself. On the horse that she was riding, she jumped over the truck as Sabu screamed, he was knocked down to the ground. He wanted to get her after she laughed at him but Subordinate C reminded him that she is a hostage.
She went to George and he asked her why she wants to go back home to the city however she is worried about her Papa and him having to cook for himself. George tells her that Ken isn't hopeless and used to living overseas begging her to stay unaware that George is keeping her hostage. Lupin came in saying that she wants to go home and tells George that he is bringing her home. He also tells her that George isn't as nice as he appears to her. As George lied by calling him a liar and fired his gun, Lupin grabbed her and jumped out of the window, he carried her and escape on a horse.
Jigen was waiting in the Fiat 500 as Lupin put her in the back seat to rest as they were driving towards her dad. She then wakes up and starts attacking both Lupin and Jigen as Lupin struggled driving and Jigen struggled putting her down. George and his henchmen were following them in a truck firing at them and she screamed for her "uncle". She then punched Jigen and waved at George however Jigen pulled her down and shot one of the tires causing the truck to crash towards a field. Rie scratched Jigen's face and pulled Lupin's face, then she attacked both of them as Lupin was unable to drive and the Fiat 500 tumbled down the hill, Rie got out and walked away from the crash.
She managed to find a house and phoned up the police telling them about Lupin however both him and Jigen managed to find her thinking that she hid in the hay. She jumped out on the beam and threw a pitchfork at Lupin but Jigen blocked her way. Lupin and Jigen were drinking soup however she refused. The radio came out saying that she was kidnapped by Lupin at 10:05 AM and is at large. Jigen went out to be with her dad.
Lupin took Rie in a tractor claiming that her father is over the mountain, across the field and by the bridge but she just glared at him. George spotted her in his helicopter when she waved back thinking that she was saved. She nearly climbed onto the ladder but Lupin refused and turned around. The police were coming so Lupin got out of the tractor and carried her with Koichi Zenigata on his tail. George shook his fist getting Sabu and Subordinate A to fire with their machine guns at Zenigata and the police as George ordered them so the police wouldn't save Rie.
Losing both Zenigata and George, Lupin found a train and she boarded alongside him. She crossed her arms being annoyed even though Lupin showed her what George was really like. Rie however still being brainwashed thinking that he had a good reason. Sabu and Subordinate C were dropped off from the helicopter onto the train, firing directly at Lupin causing Rie to scream thinking that he was dead. It turned out that Sabu only shot Lupin's jacket and asked Rie where he was otherwise he will shoot her. His partner reminded him that he will get a meal if he doesn't do anything rash. Sabu doesn't care as he didn't like her or her nagging, he also made a comment that was interrupted that Rie is the daughter of a safecracker and pretending to be a lady. Lupin was behind them and she smiled, he then unlocked the carriage to get rid of Sabu and Subordinate C.
Lupin managed to get back onto the train but she was shocked that he had no trousers, he was putting more wood into the fire to speed up the train. Rie wanted to know the truth between Ken and George but he refuses by pulling a face saying that he is a thief and a liar in a mocking way. She just rolled her eyes as a reply. Zenigata tried to stop the train with a block but it went through, Lupin held close to Rie and since she refused asking for help, he had to say it himself. The police put logs hoping to slow the train down but it didn't and became a runaway train. It went through the forest and became almost fully damaged, yet Rie enjoyed the ride and was laughing. She says that it was her first and Lupin claims that it was also his first, both being happy. Subordinate A blew up parts of the track causing Lupin and Rei to jump from the train as they were shocked and landed at a rockslide.
Rei went towards Lupin upset thinking that he was gone but she notices a photo of her father with Lupin II and George. Lupin got up and finds the photo missing demanding it back but she refused and knew that Lupin's father was on the photo. Quickly Lupin snatched the photo back saying that it doesn't concern her and laughed at her as he goes to have a wash. Rie on the other hand was upset that her father didn't tell her and knew about the past. She banged on a tree hating her Papa for being a thief. Lupin was going to tell her the truth but she no longer wanted to know, he had enough and slapped her face for being stupid. He tells her that her father is the same person that she always knew and if she wanted to be angry, do it in person and gave her a handkerchief to wipe her tears.
George and the other henchmen found Lupin and Rie in their helicopter, he ordered Rie to go to him otherwise he will shoot her alongside Lupin. Rie went to Lupin and covered her face but then told George to shoot them. He ended up shooting them as they hid behind a rock but ordered Subordinate C to stop shooting. Lupin using a catapult fired a tree at the helicopter causing it to lose control and crashed.
Lupin and Rie ran towards the bridge but a tank was blocking their path. Lupin says if Old Man Zenigata is looking for him but she replies "tottsan" (Pops) unaware that it is Lupin's nickname for the inspector as he smiled. She felt uncomfortable as she had to lie to the police officers that he left me and ran. Lupin mentions no word about George and that he was the one involved, he also helped her get up and pushed her to meet her father. She thanked Lupin and he smiled back as she went towards the police on the bridge.
She met Zenigata and confirming her name, he told her that she looked tired and asked for Lupin. She told him the lie that she mentioned earlier but closed her eyes not willing to say it and looked away. Zenigata and the police went away looking for Lupin.
Rie reunites with Ken by the bridge as she ran towards him and they hug each other thinking that the ordeal is over.
Etymology[]
- Rie's surname Makita means "shepherd, tend cattle" (牧) (maki) and "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta).
