Long Summary[]
Inspector Koichi Zenigata chases a diamond thief who turns out be Lupin III in disguise. He catches part of Lupin's pants with a sticky bag, and catches his hat with the bag, which tears off most of his hair. As the thief takes cover, Zenigata catches the diamonds with a bag as Lupin tosses them up and down in his hand, but Lupin gets them back with a knife. Lupin flees from Zenigata, and Zenigata throws another sticky bag at Lupin. He gets free but gets the bag end of his clothes torn off. As Lupin continues running, he treads on some large pieces of flypaper and is trapped. As Zenigata attempts to catch him, Lupin pins Zenigata's sleeve to a tree with a knife hidden in his boot and hops away. As Zenigata catches Lupin's foot with another bag, the thief throws the bag and a stick of dynamite in his face, causing him to dive into an empty well. The dynamite is harmless, but causes two diamonds to be stuck onto Zenigata's nose. The Inspector faints, but Lupin is still stuck in the flypaper. Goemon Ishikawa XIII tries to free him, but the glue proves to be incredibly strong, and his Zantetsuken gets stuck. Very carefully, he and Daisuke Jigen work through the night to remove the fly paper.
The next morning, the gang sits in the front room when Fujiko Mine arrives and asks Lupin for something. Jigen reminds Fujiko that she was suppose to be on vacation on a tropical island. He informs her her that Lupin is so exhausted from his scuffle with Zenigata that he didn't have the energy to do anything. Fujiko flashes her leg to get Lupin's attention, but Jigen notices that she had gained weight. Seemingly, she gives up and drives away. Still exhausted, Lupin crawls out onto the porch, with his friends trying to pull him back inside. She stops and reverses the car. She orders Lupin to go and, against their better judgement, Jigen and Goemon let Lupin slide into the back of the car. Lupin falls asleep on the journey, so Fujiko takes him to a rocky area and kicks him to wake him up. She then opens a box to reveal a woman's costume, then picks him up slaps his face. Back in the car, Fujiko tells him that Madame Luisa is hosting a big party and there are lots of rich ladies there. She tells him to take the jewels from them. To her chagrin, she finds that Lupin is still sleeping and has barely listened. She curtly wakes him and promises the share to be 70-30. Now dressed in the woman's costume, Lupin sees their destination, a large castle.
At the party, Lupin mingles with the women. Fujiko announces that Madame Luisa was going to put on a show. Just then, part of the castle became a rocket ship and blasts off into space. Lupin searches for Fujiko among the crowd. Over the public announcement system, Fujiko announces that the rocket ship Victoria was descending back to Earth. There is no one at the cockpit; the rocket is on autopilot. Once the rocket lands, "Fujiko" takes Lupin hostage.
Zenigata was working on a machine to catch Lupin until he got a phone call from the Police Chief about the events and demanded a ransom. He was about to refuse until Luisa contacted him and told him that the 151st hostage was Lupin causing Zenigata to lit up however the chief told him that while there was enough for the women, there wasn't enough money for Lupin's release. Zenigata ended up going into a town with a collection box for Lupin and he then arrived at the base, he was surprised to see "Fujiko". She asked for the money and Zenigata gave her $15 million but not enough for Lupin causing him to empty his pockets, she rejected the deal and wanted to kill him as he looked outside and Lupin was put on a cross ready for his execution.
"Fujiko" told the women that they were freed and by orders of Madame Luisa, she told them to kill Lupin with any weapon that they have got claiming that it was an Ancient Roman game, she winked at Lupin. Just as "Fujiko" was about to throw a spear, a flock of crows had arrived and attacked the women as well as the soldiers and Lupin. Zenigata rushed to grab the cross and ran away to save Lupin however Lupin was thrown into a river. As Lupin was heading down a waterfall, Goemon freed him from the cross with the Zantetsuken and fell into the waterfall with Zenigata thinking that he was dead. Lupin got into a cave when a crow went towards and attacked him however he had then killed the bird. Lupin ate the crow and traveled through the tunnel, he climbed up and it turned out that he was near Madame Luisa's castle. He continued going through the tunnel and found a secret door by a pillar.
Lupin had managed to find a room that contained various costumes including himself with only one costume being used, he then took the Zenigata disguise to put it on and also took Joan of Arc's knife as he left. He walked down corridors, went up the stairs then a room with just doors and opened the final door. Lupin was shocked to see "Fujiko" on the floor with her clothes torn and legs scratched, she also had an eyepatch on her eye. "Fujiko" asked why he was there yet "Zenigata" asked the same question, she wanted the reward for the job while he wanted 30% of the jewels. She quizzed him about the ransom. She knew that it wasn't Inspector Zenigata as he was unable to answer, and Lupin knew that she wasn't Fujiko. "Fujiko" claimed that the crows ate the jewels and the ransom money has gone, Lupin wanted to ask Madame Luisa a question that if the crows didn't attack, she would have killed him.
Luisa declared that she would kill Lupin and called him a "worm" causing him to be annoyed, she ordered him to kill her with a Colt pistol as she was the richest woman in the world. Lupin got the knife and Luisa had the pistol, she fired and Lupin slit her wrist causing the gun to drop and kicked it towards him. She wanted Lupin to shoot her as her executioner due to that she didn't want to live with an "ugly face" believing that beauty is the most important thing as she pulled her Fujiko face mask however he was unable to do the job and threw the pistol towards the couch. Lupin left the room causing Luisa to commit suicide off screen, he then left the castle with a crow following him.
Lupin had arrived underneath a bridge as Zenigata got out of the tent and explained about the "disguise detector", a crow flew by and Lupin after quickly punching Zenigata ran into the machine. Lupin and Zenigata argued against each other unable to know which was which, Zenigata got into the machine and Lupin trapped him as he appeared naked while removing his mask. Lupin also wanted the machine to have a look at Fujiko being naked. Fujiko had returned however Jigen and Goemon were not interested in her tropical island story. Lupin was still at the place where Zenigata was trapped, nude, in the machine. He saw a crow at the top of the machine, it is assumed that the crow had hypnotised Lupin as his eyes had flashed and the crow flew away off screen.

Censorship[]
Italian[]
(Note: Since this was compared with the Italian DVDs, the TV airings might be more censored.) This episode was heavily censored when it was aired on TV with a majority of the second part being removed:
- When Lupin is caught in the ball of flypaper.
- When "Fujiko" pulls her leg up saying that he is "Lupin" and Jigen notices her weight gain.
- When Fujiko kicks a sleeping Lupin out in the desert and then slaps his face.
The entire scene where Lupin was put on a cross with "Fujiko" and the women aiming to kill him but the crows come and Zenigata saves him was cut. The Italian dub returns when Lupin is calling for help and Goemon uses the Zantetsuken to free him. Lupin falling down the waterfall was cut. The reasons for the cuts were due to religious reasons, similar to Part III Episode 8.
- Lupin getting attacked by a crow then kills and eats it.
- When Lupin is looking at the disguises but returns to Italian when he notices a costume of Zenigata.
After Madame Luisa calls Lupin a worm and Lupin wonders he was called that, the following was cut:
- Lupin being mad that he was called a "little worm" and Madame Luisa explains why as she orders Lupin to kill her.
- Madame Luisa gets her gun out as she is "the richest woman in the world" and aims at Lupin as they have a duel, he throws a knife at her wrist with her gun dropped to the floor. She passed the gun to Lupin and orders him to kill her as she doesn't want to live with an ugly face and removes her disguise.
The first Italian dub returns when Lupin refuses to shoot Madame Luisa and throws the gun to the couch. After "Zenigata" traps the real Zenigata in the machine, the episode is finished in the Italian dub meaning that the following scenes were not dubbed:
- Lupin enjoying a nude Zenigata in the machine and wishing it was Fujiko instead of him.
- The real Fujiko arriving
- Lupin laughing at the trapped Zenigata before getting hypnotized by a crow.
It is unknown whether a beaten up "Fujiko" was cut due to the out of tune soundtrack on the Italian DVDs.
Mistakes[]
When Lupin is put on the cross, his head is bandaged. After the eyecatch, the bandage has gone and his hair has grown back in a miraculously short space of time.
Translation Notes[]
The title has been notoriously difficult to translate for both fans and official companies.
悪 means evil and のり meaning either glue or law/rule however 悪のり meaning getting carried away or overdoing. Until the TMS translation uses masquerade 変装 was unknown even though when the characters are split says strange (or variations of the word) dress. The last character 曲 means song, tune or composition.
The romaji for the second part is hensōkyoku. Outside of that meaning, it means variation (as in a musical type) however it is written as 変奏曲 or more simply へんそうきょく. There was no simplified Japanese text on the title card.
The previous fan translations (Play a Joke on the Variation, Variations on Getting Carried Away and Variations of a Bad Joke) as well as the Crunchyroll title Musical Variation of Monkey Business were all translated from the romaji rather than the letters and characters.
The wiki decided to use this translation until another one appears in the future if a Blu-ray release happens, this is due to that in the episode Madame Luisa disguises herself and tricks Lupin under false pretenses with this being the result as her plan got carried away, the episode also involves disguises. This is also the reason why the English subtitles on UTB Hollywood and Crunchyroll called this episode Masquerade in Hell, as did the Spanish dub.
In the Japanese original, Jigen has no dialogue when he grabs Lupin. In the Italian dub, he yells, "Stop!" In the Spanish dub he says, "Get back here!"
Notes[]
- The beginning adapts the New Lupin III chapter Sticky Fingers, with Zenigata in the place of some random guy.
- This was the only episode written by Seijun Suzuki, a Japanese film-maker known for having a surreal visual style and has an entertainment-over-logic sensibility. He would later co-direct The Legend of the Gold of Babylon.
- In the disguise room, one of the costumes is Superman and currently the last known reference to Superman in the series. There is also a costume of Joan of Arc.
- When Lupin wakes up in the car, a recurring hand gesture seen throughout the series is reflected in his eye, the way it was in the chapter Bad Press. This gesture was shown as the World Thief Olympics logo in Part 2 Episode 73, and was used by Lupin in Part 2 Episode 83 and Part 2 Episode 88.
- A key scene from the 1986 film The Mission , where a Jesuit is sent down a waterfall upside-down, tied to a cross, looks almost exactly like the shot of Lupin falling down a waterfall upside-down while partly tied to a cross.
