"The Gold Ingots Summon Lupin" is the first episode of Lupin the 3rd Part III.
Synopsis[]
Al "Scarface" Capone dies before he can tell his men where he hid his fortune in gold, and only leaves behind tiles that will lead them to it. Only thing is, he hid the others. When rumor breaks out the hunt is on to collect all the others and claim the gold getting the attention of Lupin and Fujiko. But they aren't the only ones who are interested; a Chinese crime boss and a mercenary-for-hire are also looking to get the gold.
Long Summary[]
Lupin III is half-woken from a peaceful dream about surfing by a phone call from Fujiko Mine saying that she is in San Francisco and needs his help. Lupin agrees, even though his attempt to hang up results in him blearily lying on the floor in his boxers.
On January 25 1947, Al Capone died in Miami leaving one of his tiles that he made in Alcatraz Prison regarding hidden treasure to a henchman and Fujiko had found three of the five tiles to show to Lupin. In San Francisco, Fujiko informs Lupin that Chin Kai has one of the tiles. They are then accosted by him along with Starmow. A chase ensues, which Zenigata then joins, but only to catch Lupin.
Chin Kai captures Fujiko while Starmow captures Lupin, pulling him into a seat that gets a bomb attached to his back. After being interrogated, Lupin is rescued by Daisuke Jigen and Goemon Ishikawa XIII in a helicopter.
At the hideout, Jigen manages to disarm the bomb.
Fujiko is tortured by Starmow and Chin Kai, but Goemon rescues her and she escapes with Lupin.
The gang investigates the derelict Alcatraz. As they find Capone's cell, they find a missing tile and the tiles marked with Capone's prisoner number on them. Starmow and Chin Kai track them down, but the gang use balloons and decoys, and Lupin incapacitates them.
The police arrive, but Lupin uses another balloon as a decoy for himself and escapes. Lupin and Fujiko put the tiles together and find where the gold is hidden: at "The North Foot of the Golden Gate". Lupin, Jigen and Fujiko dive for the gold while Goemon admires the dawn.

Translation Notes[]
On the English subtitles that appeared on UTB Hollywood and later Crunchyroll, Chin Kai is called "Chin Kuai" despite having no u in the name. As a note, his name in Pinyin would be Chén Guài (or Can Gwaai in Cantonese).
The English subtitles have simplified some dialogue due to character limits. Between 4:22-4:30 when Zenigata is in the police car pursuing, Lupin III had just become Lupin while San Francisco police was abbreviated to SFPD.
Lupin makes a joke to Starmow that his name is a brand of tuna however there does not seem to be a tuna brand in Japan or the US called Starmow (or Starmo/Starmoo). He says back to Lupin that he can't stand fish however according to Japanese Wikipedia and the earlier fan translation, he claims that he doesn't like Japanese food.
There were cases of dialogue that was skipped on the Crunchyroll subtitles:
- 5:09-5:12 - When Lupin is eating his burger, on the English subtitles this is not translated. According to the Chinese based fan translation he says "What's the problem?"
- 20:50 - When Zenigata grabs onto the Lupin balloon, according to the Chinese based fan translation he says "What's wrong?"
The previews were not translated as they were skipped in the Italian dub, the International masters used in the UTB Hollywood broadcast and cut out on Crunchyroll. The Spanish dub retained the preview however used a different version of "Sexy Adventure".

(Note: Since this was compared with the Italian DVDs, the TV airings might be more censored.) The Italian dub was originally censored regarding nudity and guns.
- When the pot falls on top of Lupin after the phone call from Fujiko. It's likely because it shows that Lupin had been sleeping in his underwear, something that was curiously not an issue before in previous episodes.
- When Starmow points his gun towards Lupin in Alcatraz and Jigen shoots off the top of his afro. Lupin's response was also cut.
- The scene where Chin Kai holds Fujiko was heavily cut due to nudity and on the Italian DVDs this reverts to Japanese audio. This includes:
- The part where the man grabs the dress around Fujiko's breasts and rips her clothes off.
- The man waving his shirt at a naked Fujiko and rips his own shirt.
- Starmow holding his bag as he comes in and the entire conversation between him and Chin Kai.
- Fujiko getting dropped into the pit of water and the entire scene until the end of Part 1.
- Fujiko looking up to Starmow.
- When Starmow throws the machine into the water and Fujiko panics. This haphazardly changes between Japanese and Italian as the camera pans to Starmow and Chin Kai on the DVDs.
- When Starmow stands on Fujiko's hands with his feet and her gasping.
- When Goemon saves Fujiko and she asks about Lupin.
- When Lupin holds his hand out to Fujiko and she screams "Lupin!".
On Amazon Prime and the Italian Blu-ray, the missing scenes were redubbed using the new voice actors.
Spanish[]
(Needs further research) Since the Telecinco dub was based off the Italian version, all of the above applies to the dub. The Animax dub is uncut.
Notes[]
- The episode was adapted from the San Francisco arc from the New Lupin III (Manga). Like in the chapter Frisco Homelessness, Starmow kicks Lupin out of the car, then later thinks a middle-aged man is Lupin. But in the chapter, he is Zenigata's partner. Cablecar Jack also had the scenes where Starmow wants to electrocute Fujiko and Lupin comes in a cable car to save her.
- The mercenary looking for Lupin is nicknamed by some fans as Spike Spiegel due to the vague resemblance of the character from Cowboy Bebop (itself was influenced from Lupin and that Norio Wakamoto voiced Vicious and this character). His actual name is Starmow.
- The smile that Starmow makes in the car with the rocket launcher is similar to the smile that Cobra from Space Adventure Cobra makes.
- The car that Starmow drives is a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Seville.
- Middle Aged Man in Convoy is nameless in the episode and called a truck driver by Lupin, his name comes from secondary material.
- The preview of the next episode is in worse picture quality compared to the episode.
- In the Italian dub, this is the first time in a TV series where Fujiko is called by her proper name.
- The imagined location of Lupin's dream at the beginning is undisclosed, although it's suggested to be Miami, which is known for its frequent level of shark attacks.
- Al Capone died in 1947 in Miami following a syphilis-induced stroke. The mansion he died in was once preserved as a historical site, but has since been gutted after a wealthy couple bought it in 2021.
