Lupin III Wiki

"Lupin VS The Smart Safe" is the 6th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 5.

Official Synopsis[]

The "Smart Safe" has come to the Greater Tokyo Bank. Created by the Hirameki brothers, a pair of inventors, it's a safe that analyzes the "brain power" of anyone that tries to open it. Not only that, but unless the brain power reads as 0, it won't open under any circumstances. Lupin is goaded by Fujiko and Jigen to try and crack the technological wonder, but his brain power is rated at 300! What can he do against this peculiarly secure safe?

Long Summary[]

The Hirameki brothers are in a bind; their father's store, Hirarmeki Inventions, has been plastered with foreclosure stickers, and they risk losing the store if they can't pay the taxes. As they ponder what to do on the roof, a tired Lupin III slowly runs past them, with Inspector Zenigata behind him. The younger brother gets an idea involving Lupin, which his older, dumber brother misinterprets.

Some time later, the Greater Tokyo Bank receives a notice from Lupin, attracting the press and Inspector Zenigata. There, the Hirameki brothers (who forged the Lupin notice) introduced a new invention; a safe that can read intelligence. The press is initially unimpressed, but they change their tune when the brothers reveal that the safe only opens if it reads an IQ of 0 (demonstrated by the older brother). As Lupin has an IQ of 300, they are all sure they've beaten Lupin.

Part 5 Episode 6 - Jigen explaining

Meanwhile, Fujiko eggs Lupin on to try cracking the safe, but Lupin is unwilling to do so. Jigen walks in and also tries to get Lupin to try, claiming that his intelligence and lineage will make dodging the fallout easy, but Lupin explains that his intelligence is the problem. Fujiko gets frustrated and demands Lupin to crack the safe. Lupin remarks that she's gotten bored with no rich suitors to cling to, which Fujiko denies, claiming she wants to know who made the false notice. She and Jigen then remember that Lupin owes them money for cigarettes, coffee, and gas. When Goemon walks in, coming to collect for buying rice, Lupin snaps and declares that he'll crack open the safe.

Lupin figures that less is more, and shows the group his strategy: looking like his head is empty. Once they reach the bank, Lupin puts his plan into action. Unbeknownst to them, the Hirameki brothers are watching, with the older brother rooting Lupin on. Unfortunately, the safe stops, calculating Lupin's IQ at 35. As it turns out, Zenigata and the press were watching, too. Zenigata tries to arrest Lupin for attempted larceny (even if all he did was space out), but Lupin escapes. As the safe remains unopened, the Hirameki brothers are praised.

Fujiko is furious that Lupin was unable to open it, the latter retorting that 0 brainpower isn't human. Fujiko and Jigen decide that the only thing to do is to widdle his brainpower to nothing, so Jigen tells a horrified Fujiko to strip; he reasons that when a man sees a woman showing some skin, their mental faculties plummet. Lupin is delighted, but Fujiko refuses and throws an ashtray at him. Sure enough, the impact knocks some IQ out of him. For the next couple days, Jigen and Fujiko torture Lupin via various methods, like forcing him to eat hot noodles while wearing winter coats and implementing blunt force trauma, sleep deprivation and relentless exercise. If Lupin tries to go to Goemon for help, he helps Jigen and Fujiko by suggesting vomit-inducing remedies, like adding pine cones to soba or having broth with earthworms. The day before their next attempt, Lupin's IQ has dwindled to just 1.

Part 5 Episode 6 - Zenigata and the Bank President

The night of the heist, the group bring Lupin to the safe, and he tries again. Try as they might, however, the safe calculates Lupin's IQ at 1. The younger Hirameki brother is amazed, but the older brother rushes to Lupin, seeing how hard he tried. He claims that there isn't a real difference between smart and dumb, and even says he'll open it himself, but a suddenly intelligent Lupin stops him. Touched, Lupin's IQ shoots back to 300, where Lupin reveals his backup plan: eating a bunch of fish, bones and all. Fujiko realizes that the "mega brainy fatty acid" in the fish is increasing his intelligence, and soon, the safe calculates his IQ at 301. The safe opens. Zenigata realizes that since the safe counts between zero and 300, the safe overflowed at 301 and reset to 0, and tries to arrest a suddenly braindead Lupin. The gang escapes, and since Lupin didn't steal the safe's contents, the president declares it a draw. The Hirameki brothers are upset that Lupin bested them, but the older brother reasons that all they need is fish, like Lupin. Sure enough, the two brothers begin selling this fish in cans, and they are quick to profit. The older brother even gathers attention by his lack of intelligence. The two now work hard to pay of their debts, and they owe it all to Lupin.

Back at their hideout, Goemon once again asks about the rice money, but finds Lupin accusing Fujiko and Jigen of having fun tormenting him, not taking their excuses of needing to see a beautician and dentist, respectively. Jigen remarks that Lupin wants to be a bigger pain than his tooth, and tells Fujiko to strip. Lupin wants to be dumb again, but Fujiko refuses, and responds by slamming a giant hammer on him.

Notes[]

  • This episode is a reference and shout-out to Lupin the 3rd Part III anime series with Lupin wearing a pink jacket in this episode. Jigen and Zenigata also have their suit colors. However, Goemon and Fujiko do not have their Part III designs. Fujiko's hair design, however, is from the early episodes of Lupin the 3rd Part 1.
  • While most of the episode uses a different character design compared to the character designs of Part III and the series in general, at 11:29-11:31 where Lupin stares at Fujiko is loosely based on the pose that Lupin made at the end of Part III Episode 50 where the goodbye message was played. The eyes and the facial expression is different however his side burns and his face structure matches even though it is flipped.
  • The episode is loosely based on Lupin the 3rd Part 2 episodes:
    • Part 2 Episode 143 where the bank president encourage the people to use the bank for publicity however instead of stealing from a safe that has no money, it is a brainpowered safe.
    • Part 2 Episode 19 where someone makes a safe where Lupin can not break into.
  • The beginning of the episode references the openings from Part 2 series:
    • The first opening with Lupin looking towards the bullet hole in the desert but slightly redrawn.
    • The second opening where Lupin got caught by the headlights but wearing a green jacket.
    • The third opening: crashing through a window but wearing his pink jacket outfit.
    • The fourth opening: outside of the palace, standing on a car however he wears his blue jacket outfit and his face has been altered.
  • The safe says KINKO that literally means safe in Japanese.
  • Jigen has a toothache when he has a bad feeling, something that's brought up in Part 2 Episode 1, Tokyo Crisis and Part 4 Episode 4.
  • Goemon offers Lupin jiryu-toh, a broth made from earthworms, the broth he made for Fujiko in Part 2 Episode 14.
  • The eyecatch shows moments from Part III series:
  • The moment where Fujiko and Jigen find ways of beating Lupin up with the counter going down is a reference to Ashita no Joe.
  • The white cat and the cats are a reference to Part 2 Episode 106. Yuzo Aoki who was involved with Part III series worked on the episode.
  • When Lupin approaches the bank for the second time all bandaged up with the gang holding him up is a reference to the movie The Castle of Cagliostro.
  • When Fujiko hits Lupin with a hammer, it is a reference to City Hunter where Kaori does that to Ryo. This reference was included due to that both Kenji Kodama and Yuzo Aoki who worked on Lupin later worked on City Hunter for Sunrise.
  • Fujiko throws an ashtray in Lupin's face the way she did in Part 2 Episode 145.
