Notes[]

  • The premise of this episode was inspired by the Arsene Lupin story The Queen's Necklace. This, in turn, was inspired by the real-life Affair of the Diamond Necklace, in which Queen Marie Antoinette was accused of participating in a crime of defrauding the Crown jewellers by acquiring an expensive diamond necklace she refused to pay for. One of the people prosecuted in the affair was Giuseppe Balsamo, also known as Alessandro, Count Cagliostro. Balsamo was held in Bastille for nine months before being acquitted. Balsamo's fictional alleged relative, Josephine, was Arsène Lupin's regular lover and adversary. Not mentioned in the episode was the other dupe, Cardinal de Rohan, who Lupin is related to through his great-grandmother Henriette d'Andresy.
