The Day Without Pops is the 98th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.
Synopsis[]
Lupin and Jigen are surrounded, as usual, as they are trying to escape after a jewelry theft. But somebody shoots at Zenigata and hits him dead on. Lupin learns of the even the next morning in the papers, and Fujiko and Goemon get implicated. However, there's a conspiracy behind it all.

Translation Notes[]
Due to that Inspector Koichi Zenigata had different nicknames, this meant that the title was translated multiple times throughout. Before an official nickname was chosen, fans had translated this episode as The Day the Old Man Died due to that it was his nickname on the Toho/Frontier dub of The Mystery of Mamo. From 2003, Zenigata's official English nickname was Pops however it was unknown whether Geneon had translated or planning to translate the episode as they closed down. When it was uploaded onto streaming sites in 2015, Crunchyroll had used the name Daddio[1]. This may have came from TMS in the 1980s and was not corrected to Pops. Discotek decided to call the episode The Day When Pops Was Gone. Since Zazà, Papi and Papaíto were the nicknames of Zenigata in the Italian and Spanish dubs, this meant that the title also had them.

The episode was previously more censored in Italian by Mediaset between 1987 and 2004, these include:
- The small scene showing the coffin, this was reverted by 2004 however the screen flickers during this scene. It is still censored due to removing the Japanese text saying Paris Military Hospital with the hospital background and panning was introduced in the scene.
- The scene where Lupin picks up the book regarding plans to look after the body of Zenigata, reverted by 2004 however visible tape tracking can be seen at the top of the screen.
Current TV airings are more relaxed regarding censorship with most being freeze frames to remove Japanese text.
- The book that says "(Secret) Police Force plans for guarding the body of Inspector Zenigata" was replaced by a freeze frame of Lupin looking into the book.
- The scene of Zenigata's portrait on TV was replaced by a freeze frame of the police cars from the next scene.
- There is a freeze frame outside of the crematorium to remove a scene where the camera scrolls down with the officer standing by the sign.
It is unknown whether the scene at ICPO after Lupin picks up the book is cut or just the text.
Notes[]
- In the newspaper article about Lupin murdering Zenigata; there are clippings from "The Darkwater Hall Mystery" a pastiche starring Sherlock Holmes and the 1978 Playboy interview with singer and gay rights opponent Anita Bryant. There are other clippings in the collage however they are currently unknown.
- This was the last episode where Akinari Takashina was credited under his real name, from Part 2 Episode 102 he was credited as Kō Takashina.
- This was also the last episode where Kazuhide Tomonaga had worked for Oh! Production as he moved to Telecom Animation Film for the production of The Castle of Cagliostro.
