Censorship[]
Italian[]
There are freeze frames throughout the episode to remove Japanese text as the Italian TV airings use the Japanese masters rather than the later provided International masters. These were not translated into Italian and the one with the printing press was cut.
- Due to the above reason, the Japanese letter with the bullet holes was replaced by a freeze frame of Lupin talking while Holmes III reads the letter.
Some Italian airings cut out the whole scene where Lupin attempts to sleep with Fujiko. This is either because of the implication that Lupin wants to have sex with Fujiko, or merely the fact that he's half-nude and she's dressed in a towel, until she throws it off once she gets into the bed with him. As such, the episode starts when he's already unconscious.
Others show the whole scene. It's likely that the scene was shown its entirety in earlier airings, and was removed in later ones. The missing dialogue is this:
Lupin: You just slipped me something, didn't you?
Fujiko: Yes, a little pill.
Lupin: Aha, a pill for invigoration.
Fujiko: No, it's the opposite.
Lupin: The opposite?
Fujiko: To make you calm and relaxed.
Lupin: Calm and relaxed... [passes out]
Mistakes[]
Fujiko takes out one of Lupin's back left teeth to get the microfilm. However, the next morning when his head is bandaged, the cushion is on the right side of his face.
Lupin shoots the rope the assassins are bound to without killing or wounding any of them.
Notes[]
- When Holmes III looks out of the window, a variation of the Mission Impossible theme plays.
- The idea of having a house flying into the sky with a balloon was later used in the movie Up.
- In the Italian version, Lupin looks for treasure that belongs to Jed Marshal instead of Arsène Lupin due to copyright reasons. This causes a continuity error as Lupin goes to a tomb that is clearly marked LUPIN I.
- The English Discotek translation of the credits has some mistakes such as James Duman and Rasputin.
Production[]
- This episode was originally planned for Lupin the 3rd Part 1 however the script was not used due to the director change and was rewritten for the series. It would have been Episode 15 but was replaced with Part 1 Episode 15. The original name of the episode would have been called The Legend of Arsène Lupin's Enormous Treasure! (アルセーヌ・ルパンの莫大な財宝の伝説!, Arusēnu Rupan no bakudaina zaihō no densetsu !)[1] then it was renamed The Treasure Sleeps 700 Nautical Miles (秘宝は700海里に眠る, Hihō wa nana zero zero kairi ni nemuru).[2] The final episode name was based on the original title.
- Originally the episode was going to have a descendant of Watson, Holmes III would have been referred in episode as Sherlock Holmes III and wore a top hat.
- The plotline would have involved a map rather than Fujiko stealing something from Lupin, Holmes and Watson were unable to understand the location.
- Instead of the US, England and Russia being involved, it was originally going to be the European Power Alliance of European countries and recognised the island as a country.
- Holmes, Watson and the European spies were going to abduct Lupin III rather than Lupin, Daisuke Jigen and Goemon Ishikawa XIII travelling to the Flying Paradise.
