Lupin III Wiki

Play the Thief's Symphony is the 89th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.

Synopsis[]

The World Crime Prevention Devices Association has developed the "killer safe" that sent many safe crackers to their graves. Their ultimate product is the atomic safe, located 100 meters underground, which is said to detect sounds and detonate, blowing thieves to smithereens. Not only that, the bomb goes off when the weight of the elevator going up is heavier than when it went down. But Lupin takes the challenge to steal what it guards, regardless. The end result is...

Long Summary[]

Lupin is dozing while listening to Beethoven's 3rd when Fujiko tips him off about a safe that is protected by a nuclear reactor developed by the WCPDA. Lupin takes up the challenge and heads there disguised as Zenigata. He learns that the safe is surrounded with a motion and sound detector that sets off the nuclear reactor. He is seriously disturbed by this and imagines himself turning into powder trying to break in. As he and the president of the company leave, he learns that the elevator will explode if it's heavier going up than it is going down. Although the reconnaisance mission is successful to a degree, Lupin is found out and makes his escape. The dogs are set on him and he fends them off in a somewhat cruel bit of self-defence.

Four more months pass and Lupin is hard at work in a desert cabin, figuring out a way to break into the safe with a device that cancels all noise in the immediate environment. Unshaven and unwashed, he is visited by Jigen and Goemon, who suggest he take a break. Lupin stubbornly refuses. Goemon tosses Lupin his tape, which gives him a moment of inspiration: he can cancel out the noise with music, combined with sonic waves. Overcome with joy, he begs Jigen and Goemon to take him back with them while they tease him from inside the helicopter.

The gang breaks in and safely reaches the safe, using Beethoven's 3rd, the same music Lupin took a nap to at his hideout at the beginning of the episode. They find Zenigata waiting for them inside the safe. All treasures previously stored had been moved. Jigen prepares to shoot Zenigata, but the Inspector quickly notices and threatens to sound the alarm. Lupin has the upper hand and threatens to set off the nuclear reactor and almost does so by turning off the music. He turns the music on again, and the flow and ebb of nuclear energy knocks the Inspector out. Jigen and Goemon drag Zenigata to the lift, and Lupin brings him to. He helps Zenigata by handing him a balloon. The elevator cannot sustain more than three people without exploding, so they have him float in mid-air with a balloon. Once at a safe level, they escape through a hole Goemon cut in the wall. Goemon pops the balloon, and Zenigata follows them out through a tunnel. The building explodes.

The gang make their escape in a Jeep, but the company President's tiger attacks them. The gang dives out. With its head trapped in the bent and broken windshield, the tiger and Jeep crash into a cliffside.

Zenigata gets out safely, although he is disheveled, and he and the President lament letting Lupin get away.

"This is it? ... but it's an empty ruin!"

Mistakes[]

  • At the beginning, the wire connecting the record player to Lupin's headset appears and disappears between shots.
  • When Lupin is telling the dog to go away, Fujiko's mouth moves but she doesn't say anything. Then when she says "It's my pet", her mouth doesn't move.
  • When the gang reaches the top floor, Zenigata's mouth seems to have moved away from the balloon.

Translation Notes[]

In the Spanish dub, Jigen says "Bye" to Lupin as he's leaving the cabin. In all other versions, he doesn't say anything.

In the Spanish dub, Lupin hums a tune while accessing the safe. In the Japanese original, he imitates the beeping noises of the buttons.

Notes[]

  • The Italian name references to Symphony No. 3 aka Heroic Symphony by Beethoven.
  • During the scenes where the characters speak despite having no sound due to Lupin's experiment, in the original Japanese and Italian TV airings there are Japanese subtitles displayed on what they are saying. In the International masters used on streaming sites and the Italian DVDs, these scenes are textless.
  • Jigen says he doesn't understand classical music or art. In Part 2 Episode 48 he happily listens to classical music, and in Part 2 Episode Part 2 Episode 79 he finds classical music boring and dozes off during a performance.
  • Lupin seeing if 'Eroica' makes a good lullaby harks back to him sleeping during Kyoransky's performance in Episode 79.
  • Lupin abuses animals here close to the level of his manga counterpart. This is a stark exception, however, given that first, the animals in question are dangerous, and second, in the anime he's generally good with animals such as cats, mice and birds.
