Translation Notes[]

Due to that Inspector Koichi Zenigata had different nicknames, this meant that the title was translated multiple times throughout. Before an official nickname was chosen, fans had translated this episode as The Old Man Hostage Rescue Operation due to that it was his nickname on the Toho/Frontier dub of The Mystery of Mamo.[1] From 2003, Zenigata's official English nickname was Pops however it was unknown whether Geneon had translated or planning to translate the episode as they closed down. When it was uploaded onto streaming sites in 2015, Crunchyroll had used the name Daddio[2]. This may have came from TMS from the 1980s translation scripts that were used as a base for the dubs. While the title was not corrected to Pops, the episode itself used the nickname. Discotek decided to simplify the episode name by calling it Rescuing Pops. Since Papaíto was one of the nicknames of Zenigata in the Spanish dubs, the Animax dub used the nickname in the title. The Italian dub and the Spanish Telecinco dub renamed the title.

Mistakes[]

In the original Japanese version and the Italian TV airings, the map at the beginning of the episode is full of mistakes with only London, Paris and Milano are spelled correctly. The rest are either due to Romanization from Japanese or transcription:

  • "Amsteldam" - Amsterdam
  • "Blussell" - Brussels
  • "Bellin" - Berlin
  • "Belne" - Berne
  • "Biskey" - Biscay
  • "Boapest" - Budapest
  • "Bon" - Bonn
  • "Chirina" - Tirana
  • "Dovuer" - Dover
  • "Duvlln" - Dublin
  • "Hamblku" - Hamburg
  • "Kopenhargen" - København (Copenhagen)
  • "Laoma" - Roma (Rome)
  • "Liyone" - Lyon
  • "Madorido" - Madrid
  • "Malseiu" - Marseille(s)
  • "Monako" - Monaco
  • "Munhen" - Munchen (Munich)
  • "Plaha" - Praha (Prague)
  • "Sofiya" - Sofia
  • "Tolino" - Torino (Turin)
  • "Ueene" - Wien (Vienna)
  • "Veograd" - Beograd (Belgrade)
  • "Walsaow" - Warszawa (Warsaw)

Most of these errors were fixed in the International masters except for "Liyone" and "Sofiya". Biskey was also changed to Bay of Biscay.

  • When the TV shows Napoleon XI, his entire eyes are colored in blue.

Notes[]

  • Lupin and Jigen hums to Napoleon XI "La Marseillaise" while they are trying to free themselves. In the Italian dub, it was kept as Yasuo Yamada and Kiyoshi Kobayashi rather than getting Roberto Del Giudice and Sandro Pellegrini to sing. This was unchanged on the Italian Blu-ray. The terrorists also salute to Napoleon while "La Marseillaise" plays. The irony is that both Napoleon I and III had their own anthems instead.
  • Unusual for most of the Lupin series outside of Lupin the 3rd Part 1 and the TV Specials, at the end of Part 1 there is a fadeout when Zenigata trembles with the gun to his face. While this is common in Western animation, it is quite rare in terms of anime due to eyecatches.
  • When Lupin is complimenting Zenigata towards the terrorists, a variation of the "Mission Impossible" theme plays.
  • While Zenigata is mourning for Lupin, the instrumental of the Zenigata March plays.
  • Napoleon the Eleventh's heavy sleeping is a parody of the real life Napoleon's supposed habit of only sleeping for three or four hours.
  • In the gang's hideout are books of Tatsuzô Ishikawa stories and Sartre stories, a Mark Twain collection, books about the Doobie Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, BB King and Roxy Music, one titled Crime Philosophy, and another titled Child in Time, which is a Deep Purple song. When Lupin is contacting the terrorists, there is a book on Goya behind him.
