Lupin III Wiki

The Flying Zantetsuken is the 61st episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.

Synopsis[]

When a gang boss and an arms dealer join forces, nothing good is to come of it. They set their sights on Goemon's Zantetsuken, which can cut even tanks in half. Fujiko is hired to steal the sword, so they may transform it into an invincible flying war machine. Meanwhile, Lupin and the gang head to Central Africa to get back the Zantetsuken, but does it have any weaknesses?!

Long Summary[]

Lupin, Jigen and Goemon meet with Al Camone for some sort of deal, in a place in Chicago where Capone used to co-operate. Camone is none too friendly and starts opening fire on the gang, even sending tanks in. While Lupin and Jigen make their getaway into the river, Goemon fends off the tanks with his Zantetsuken. At the hotel, Fujiko brings the men bourbon, which cheers up Lupin and Jigen, who have caught a cold from their swim in the river. Fujiko asks Goemon to try some. He refuses, but he's pressured by Lupin into trying it. Goemon finds he likes it. Soon, the men are all passed out. Fujiko carefully takes the Zantetsuken from the sleeping Goemon and replaces it with a broom. She delivers it to Camone, who gives her a million dollars for it. In turn, Camone delivers it to an arms dealer named Sherlock. The next morning, the men wake up to find Goemon's sword gone. Lupin phones Zenigata, disguised as a stranger, telling him Lupin has been spotted in the hotel. The police head there immediately. Over at the hotel, Goemon cannot commit seppuku, so he tries to hang and shoot himself at the same time. Lupin and Jigen hear Zenigata approaching and make a run for it. Zenigata arrives and takes Goemon into custody. At Sherlock's factory, the sword is grafted to a special drone. Sherlock plans to start a war between East and West Naire, so that they will buy his weapons. The two countries start fighting again as planned. Lupin and Jigen see the war on the TV and recognise the Zantetsuken on the drone. They figure Sherlock and Camone are colluding and decide to collect Goemon and head for one of the Naires. At the jail, Goemon is starving himself, which worries Zenigata. Lupin arrives, disguised as a guard, to tell the Inspector that Goemon is being transferred, and locks him in a cell. The gang arrive in central Africa in a small airplane. Lupin looks for signs of Camone and the sword while Goemon carves a new blade for himself out of bamboo. Fujiko watches Sherlock make a near literal killing from his arms factory, although she has no remorse for what she's done. She could have asked for more money. Back over one of the Naires, Camone spots Lupin's plane and sends the Zantetsuken at them. Lupin and Jigen demand Goemon do something, but he suggests they land the plane first. The sword cuts off the plane's wings and the plane crashes. Goemon tries to stop the drone with the bamboo blade, but the Zantetsuken easily slices it and he's forced to flee with the others. As it starts to grow dark, Camone decides to call it a day. Fujiko has made it to one of the Naires as well, and has been watching from the bushes and taking pictures of Camone. Night falls, and the gang sets up camp. Goemon lies awake, thinking of a weakness the Zantetsuken has. He suddenly remembers that it can't cut through konnyaku. The gang works through the night digging up konnyaku, grinding it into a gel and spreading it on the plane. The next morning, Camone destroys Fujiko's jeep with the drone, then sends it off to finish Lupin and his gang, who are waiting in the konnyaku-covered plane. It fails to cut through the coating. Then he sends the sword into the plane like a dart, but it gets stuck there, and the drone parts fall away. The gang then rams Camone's jeep with the plane. The gang then punishes Fujiko by having Goemon stuff leftover konnyaku into her mouth. With a confession from Camone and Fujiko's pictures, Lupin alerts the ICPO. Back in Chicago, Zenigata goes after Sherlock. Sherlock tries to outrun the police, but is horrified to see Goemon stand on the other side of the bridge. The samurai cuts Sherlock's car in half and it explodes. Goemon calmly walks away from the wreckage.

Mistakes[]

  • In the Japanese original, Hotel Chicago is spelled as Cicago. This was fixed in the International masters and the sign was adjusted to remove the gap between the T and the E.
  • In the Japanese original, Lupin calls Zenigata "Pops" over the phone and the Inspector doesn't think twice about it.
  • In the scene where he and Lupin are knocked out by the spiked bourbon, Jigen's right ear keeps going from having a shadow cast over it to not having one.
  • There's no explanation as to where the gang got the bowl and shovel from.
  • After Lupin, Jigen and Goemon finish spreading the konnyaku paste, a bird's eye view shows them lying asleep near the plane's nose. The scene cuts to the front of the plane, and then in another long shot, the trio are gone, along with the bowl they used to carry the yam paste in.

Censorship[]

Italian[]

There were two cuts on the Italian TV airings both linked to suicide, these cuts also made it on VHS and DVD releases:

  • 8:02-8:27 - The scene where Goemon wants to commit suicide for losing the Zantetsuken with Lupin and Jigen wanting to save him was not only cut on TV airings but was also cut on VHS and DVD releases, the latter dual language release had the missing scene in Japanese with Italian dub subtitles. On the Italian Blu-ray, this scene is restored using the original audio rather than being redubbed like many lost scenes however the audio quality is notably worse.
  • 8:34-8:40 - When Zenigata comes into the hotel room and Goemon is moaning about how he wants to die. It is unknown whether the TV airings from 2004 had restored this scene due to more relaxed censorship however it was restored on the Italian Blu-ray without any sound issues.

Translation Notes[]

In the Japanese original, Lupin calls Zenigata "Pops" over the phone while pretending to be someone else (which should have caused Zenigata to recognise him right away). In the Italian dub, he uses his own voice but refers to Zenigata as "Inspector". likewisem in the Castillan dub, he doesn't say "Papaito" but uses his own voice. In the English dub, he disguises his voice and says "The point is, he's here now. Aloha."

In the Japanese original, there's no dialogue until a little later as the plane crashes. In the English dub, Lupin cries "Jigen!", and Jigen says, "Lupin, get your hands off that...!" and then grunts as the plane starts to bounce on the tree tops.

In the English dub, Sherlock says "What the devil?" as he sees Zenigata tailing him, and then says "No!" as he sees Goemon.

Notes[]

  • The bourbon that Fujiko gets for Lupin, Jigen and Goemon is I.W. Harper. The bottle is blurred out in the episode though making the text hard to read.
  • The episode is rated 39th according to the staff at TMS. [1]
  • From a production standpoint, this is the first episode to include the themes "Tornado", "Zantetsuken", and "Zenigata March".
