Lupin III Wiki

The Face of Goodbye at the National Border is the 58th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.

Synopsis[]

The target is the Aurora Drop, a diamond adorning a ballerina's forehead. A special remote-control operation nets the diamond easily enough, but a wounded Jigen is rescued by said ballerina, Monika, and ends up helping her put her desire to defect into action. With fake passports declaring them husband and wife, the two of them head for the border. The only way to escape the Communist Bloc is to smash through the checkpoint.

Notes[]

  • Monika is played by the renowned Ikeda Masako, perhaps best known for her portrayal of Maetel, the mysterious heroine of Galaxy Express 999.
  • The story also includes an homage to the 1949 film: The Third Man.
  • This episode was rumored to be directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, famous for directing Mobile Suit Gundam using the alias Yagi Ishikura[1] This alias appeared in Episode 19 of Daitarn 3 [1], a show that Tomino had directed before Gundam and was aired a few weeks before this episode.
  • The English Geneon title is a reference to the song "Gettin' Jiggy wit It" by Will Smith.
  • The text next to where Jigen's fake passport photo would be translates along these lines: "When it became known about the awarding of the publication prize to me, he made it difficult for me to write that he was rather not a premium to the world, but rather a prize for raising."
  • The episode is rated 49th according to the staff at TMS.[2]
