"Hanafubuki: The Mysterious Gang of Five - Part 2" is the 56th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.
Synopsis[]
Goemon, siding with the Shiranami Five, challenges Lupin to a one-on-one duel. While Goemon keeps Lupin busy, the Shiranami Five steals the 36 Views, but one of its members, Kikuko Benten, betrays her gang and escapes with the loot. In fact, that was her plan from the start! What will become of the 36 Views, and where will Goemon and Kikuko's betrayal lead?

Translation Notes[]
Hanafubuki refers to when the cherry blossoms fall off a tree to the ground like a snow storm, it can be translated as Falling Cherry Blossoms, Shower of Cherry Blossoms[1] or Cherry Blossom Blizzard[2]. While sakura is the Japanese word for cherry blossom, hana (flower) is used in this context. This event happens during Spring despite the episode being set in Autumn. On the English Geneon translation, this was translated as Shower of Cherry Blossoms: Mysterious Gang of Five. The English Discotek translation simplified the title further to Mysterious Gang of Five.
The introductions given by Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, Fujiko Mine, Goemon Ishikawa XIII and Inspector Koichi Zenigata are altered between dubs. The Japanese original uses Japanese name order outside of Lupin and the English dub uses Western order for all characters. Lupin's introduction is similar between the Japanese original, the Italian dub and the English dub with a change of word choice for lipsyncing.
Jigen's introduction was changed as he was more aggressive in the English dub adding as a warning "don't make fun of my hat" and "I don't take no crap". It was mentioned that he had a fast curve and a random shooter in the Japanese original while it was changed to shooting around corners and in the dark in the English dub. In the Japanese original, Jigen says that "his misoginy would make even Dirty Harry green with envy" while it was changed to "my reputation for misogyny is legendary" in the English dub. The reference to Dirty Harry was dropped in some versions.
Fujiko's introduction goes into detail regarding her breasts in the Japanese original comparing them to "two full moons" and "the flower between my breasts could be a woman's heart or a white lily". The English dub, Fujiko just says that they are compared to "twin peaks", a rumor how Monkey Punch had named Fujiko and added that she is "blessed with a naturally cute face". In the Italian dub, her introduction was rewritten and Fujiko Mine spoke her name in Japanese order (as Mine Margot, pronounced mine mar-go rather than me-nay fu-ji-ko) rather than the other characters who are spoken in Western order.
Goemon calls himself "I'm just a common run in the mill thief" in the English dub while in the Japanese original, it was a more poetic phrase; "one of those thieves who outnumber the grains of beach sand". This was changed due to being based on a Japanese saying and changed to a similar meaning in English.
The English dub adds an innuendo at the start of Zenigata's speech and drops the fact that he comes from Japan. Due to already saying that he is part of Japanese Interpol earlier, Inspector Zenigata's introduction was changed from "Inspector Zenigata of Japan" to "ispettore di polizia Zenigata" in the Italian dub.
Censorship[]
- In the original Japanese version, Jigen gives a pack of Marlboro cigarettes to Fujiko. On the International masters used for the Geneon dub streaming sites and the Italian DVDs, the logo has been removed.
Notes[]
- The fight scene between Lupin III and Goemon Ishikawa XIII was later featured in Part 5 Episode 22 however it was reanimated.
- The background that Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko and Zenigata were in front of while introducing themselves to the Shiranami Five is "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" by Hokusai. This was the first ukiyo-e print of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji that Lupin was trying to steal.
- The gang all wear blue kumadori while performing a kabuki act. Blue kumadori is usually associated with villains or others with negative intentions. Even Zenigata, who is as much of a rogue as the other four, wears this makeup, being the sort of person who, though loving justice, bends the law and damages property to get his quarry.
- Jigen introduces himself as onnagirai (the term means woman-hater, misogynist but also misogyny and contains the verb 'kirai' so can be translated in an actual sentence like "I hate women"). In reality Jigen's speech makes a direct reference to the Dirty Harry character and the accusation of misogyny the eponymous movie series faced in the 70s. Erroneous interpretations have led some western viewers to read too much into it and come to the conclusion that Jigen isn't entirely straight, but that's a major example of cultural misunderstanding that doesn't translate well between Japanese and English. To make things clearer, Lupin also defines himself as onnagirai in episode 93. What Jigen actually says in the original is as follows: “Next up is Magnum's quick shot, trick shot, random shot. Popularly known as the cool guy whose misogyny would turn even Dirty Harry green with envy. Jigen Daisuke, that's me.”
- Kikuko Benten's name may be a reference to the thief Benten-kozô, who was the protagonist of a kabuki play, and part of a bandit quintet.
