Translation Notes[]

The English dub was altered compared to the Japanese original and the Italian dub by rewriting the script, adding extra dialogue and has a scene where Lupin muses needing Goemon's "Zantetsu sword" while Jigen doesn't listen and is distracted by the sight of Zenigata in the armored car. It also added some Australian slang such as saying "mate".

When Zenigata compliments Lupin to Inspector Penguin, he thinks that Zenigata is siding with a thief while in the English dub, this was changed to Penguin accusing Zenigata of being love with Lupin, while Lupin-as-Zengiata admits to a "perverse fascination". It also changes a line from Zenigata, from him admitting that calling Lupin good-looking is a stretch, to bellowing, "You are in love with the guy! And you always have been, you big egomaniac!"

The note that Lupin leaves Inspector Penguin is different between the Japanese, the English subtitles used in the Geneon translation and the English dub, the latter adding a pop culture reference to The Terminator played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Japanese English subtitles English dub
Dear Old Man Penguin, Zenigata's life is priceless. This time I say goodbye but one day I'll come to take the Sleeping Lion. (The letter is signed Lupin III however it is not spoken.) Dear Old Penguin Man, I'm leaving since Pops' life is irreplaceable but I'll be back to take the Sleeping Lion. Lupin the Third. Golden Lions come and go but a good man's word surpasses gold, but don't celebrate too soon though Jack because just like Arnold "I'll be back". See ya.

In the Spanish dub, Jigen says "I can't do this anymore" while he yawns.

Censorship[]

Italian[]

While it is unknown whether the original airing had these scenes, there are two missing scenes in the Italian dub. These were cut in not just the TV airings but also VHS and DVD releases. It is unknown whether it is lost due to the cut or were never dubbed.

  • From 11:33 to 12:12 the scene where the two drivers in the armored car release the gas knocking Lupin and Jigen out was cut. The missing lines are:
Driver 2: Hey, he wants us to come out peacefully.
(both drivers laugh)
Driver 1: They have no idea of the workings of this armored truck. I pity the fools.
Jigen: Hey, come on out! We won't kill you!
Lupin: Wha... Wha... Wha...? What is this smoke?
Jigen: Damn! For some reason, I'm getting sleepy.
Driver 1: Good, let's take a look at the stupid faces of our would-be hijackers.
  • From 19:12 to 19:43 when Inspector Penguin calls for Lupin in the armored car however he had already left. It was cut due to Japanese text on Lupin's note. The missing lines are:
Inspector Penguin: Lupin, you are completely surrounded! You are trapped! Come out peacefully!
(no response)
Penguin: Very well, we are going in!
Lupin in narrative voice: Dear Old Man Penguin, I'm leaving since Zenigata's life is priceless. This time I say goodbye but one day I'll come to take the Sleeping Lion.

In the Italian Blu-ray, this scene was restored using what appears to be using the dub script however since the voice actors passed away, unknown voice actors voiced the missing lines doing impressions of Lupin, Jigen, Inspector Penguin and the drivers with a difference in audio quality and the voices are notably different. This means that it is one of the few times that Roberto Del Giudice and Sandro Pellegrini doesn't voice Lupin and Jigen in Part 2 in Italian. In the new dub, Penguin reads the letter while in the original Japanese it was Lupin's voice.

There are two missing lines in the Italian dub where Lupin says "Sorry buddy" to the drivers that they knock out and Penguin saying "Go" however these might not be in the script.
