Lupin Has Become a Vampire is the 34th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.
Synopsis[]
Shingō Village, Japan, a place where, according to legend, Jesus Christ was washed ashore. In an excavated casket, a beautiful woman is found in a near-death state with a golden statuette of the Virgin Mary. Lupin goes after the statuette, but the woman, Camilla, revives, and brings Lupin into her circle of vampire acquaintances. She is Christ's twin sister, and she stole the statuette from her brother and fled. Will Fujiko be rescued from the sacrifice held by a horde of vampires?

Differences Between Manga and Anime[]
- In the manga, Lupin really does become a vampire, and the only way he's cured is him smelling Dracula's farts, which is such a bizarre twist that even the other characters think is stupid.
- The subplot of the Virgin Mary statue, along with Camilla and the wolf.
- Fujiko and Zenigata are absent from the chapter.
- At the end of the chapter, Lupin is cured but Jigen and Goemon have become vampires instead.
Translation Notes[]
The English Geneon translation did not translate the sign outside of the doctor's surgery however according to the Italian Blu-ray, this was translated as Hiraki Clinic. The surgery is called Hirarai Clinic.
The English dub has Lupin not knowing Camilla's name until much later, and he calls her "Mystery girl" up to this point. As such, in the English dub, when he dozes by her empty bedside, he snores instead of talking in his sleep about her, and wakes up saying "You feeling better?". The French dub does exactly the same thing, and has him calling her "Miss".
The English dub leads into a joke. In the Japanese original, Fujiko just says "There's no way to get up the mountain tonight." In the English dub, she adds "Only an idiot would dare to attempt it", which leads into the scene of Zenigata clinging to a steep mountain side in the pouring rain, wondering what he's doing up there.
In the original version, Zenigata says nothing as he walks into the church. In the English dub he timidly admits that the last time he prayed, it was for a two-wheeler.
The English dub creates a plot hole where neither Camilla, Jigen or Goemon realize that Lupin is not a vampire after all after she spots his reflection in the mirror. In the Japanese original, Camilla exposes Lupin right away.
Censorship[]
Italian / French[]
Both the Italian and French dubs had rewritten the dialogue to remove the link between Camilla and Jesus as well as removing most religious connections such as the Virgin Mary statue, coming from Bethlehem and her parents being Mary and Joseph. This is due to religious reasons as it would have been considered a sensitive subject.
English[]
The English dub was also censored as the Virgin Mary was not directly mentioned, Dr. Sado Marukido talked about the "Mother of Christ" and the references to the statue were rewritten. Jesus was only mentioned once by "Presley" and no connection to Camilla as she said that "it is forbidden to mention the name of my brother". The other religious connections including Camilla's parents being Mary and Joseph however were intact.
Notes[]
- The episode has an unstable picture when it appears to shake up and down during the first half. The scenes that are worst affected are when the reporter tells Dr. Marukido about the casket, Zenigata runs to get his hat back from a bat, when Jigen is by himself during the playing cards scene, when the nurse tells the doctor about Camilla, when the bats fly over the Archaeological Studies Center.
- On the Italian Blu-ray, this is one of the few episodes where it received a different remaster compared to the Japanese VAP Blu-ray and the Discotek DVD release as the picture was clearer and the small border at the top and bottom was removed. The furigana on the title card is also easier to make out.
- In the English dub, Jigen does a bad Peter Lorre impression while disguised as Goemon's servant. It's a myth that Lorre, an Austro-Hungarian actor who had been working in Hollywood since 1934, ever played a servant to a vampire or mad scientist. In fact, he played a mad scientist himself in the film Mad Love, and a mental patient's harried plastic surgeon in Arsenic and Old Lace.
- The episode's premise may have been loosely inspired by the legendary Takeuchi documents destroyed during World War 2, which tell of Jesus fleeing to Japan while his younger brother Isukiri was executed in his place. Jesus' alleged True Tomb is located in the Northern Japanese town of Shingō.
