Lupin III Wiki

Lupin Dies Twice is the 32nd episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.

Synopsis[]

On the tail of Lupin, Zenigata is at the wheel of a patrol car and sitting next to him is Fujiko, of all people. She believes that the best way to protect Lupin from the high-speed hitman Puma is for him to be arrested by the police. Lupin tests Puma's ability to hit at long range and goes out for a one-on-one showdown... and gets shot!

Long Summary[]

Lupin and Jigen are driving on the road through Miami when Jigen sees they're being tailed. Jigen gets a good look in the rearview mirror and sees that not only is Zenigata pursuing them, but Fujiko is in the front passenger seat.

Fujiko explains over the public announcement system that an assassin named Puma is out to get Lupin, and the only way he'll be safe is if he lets Zenigata arrest him.

Jigen researches Puma on a miniature computer and learns how dangerous he is, but Lupin is not one to refuse a challenge and wishes to meet him.

After a chase, Lupin is cornered by police. Zenigata tries handcuffing Lupin, but he ends up falling for the old fake arm trick, and Lupin and Jigen escape in ejector seats. The pair are flown to a safe house by Goemon.

At the house, they try to find out where he could be. Night falls, and Lupin tries getting Puma to reveal himself by putting a marionette of himself at the window. They learn that he's hiding out on a yacht, but unfortunately now Puma knows where Lupin is as well, and spends the next day shooting at him at every chance he gets.

Lupin calls the mortician and tells him what he wants written on his tombstone. Jigen and Goemon walk in on Lupin's conversation. Lupin explains to the two that he's finally decided he can't win and he's going to face Puma or die trying, most likely the latter. He slings on his Walther and leaves.

On a high cliff, Lupin searches for Puma, but gets shot multiple times and falls into the sea below. Jigen and Goemon search for Lupin and find him floating face down in the water. Goemon pulls him out and they see how badly he's been shot.

They take him to the doctor, but he tells them there's nothing he can do. At that moment, the mortician comes in with the coffin. The grim reality hits Jigen and Goemon, and, overcome with grief, they run out onto the road in tears and start destroying various things. Jigen shoots lampposts and Goemon slices palm trees. As a crowd gathers around the sobbing pair, Puma watches from among them. The police arrive and arrest the pair.

Zenigata arrives to inspect Lupin's body. He's incredulous at first, but when Lupin fails to respond, Zenigata falls to pieces. As Zenigata cries over Lupin's body, the mortician whispers something to Fujiko.

Like Jigen and Goemon, Zenigata flies into a rage and runs out of the place firing his gun; he's promptly arrested and thrown in a cell with the other two. Zenigata admonishes Jigen and Goemon for letting Lupin die.

At dusk, Lupin's funeral is carried out, with Fujiko walking alongside the coffin, and Zenigata, in tears, bringing up the rear. The thief is buried in a cemetery. Puma watches from among the tombstones.

At the Miami Beach Hotel, Puma contacts an unknown superior known as Tiger.

Night falls. Fujiko and the mortician arrive at Lupin's grave, and discuss how much longer he can stay buried without suffocating. While this is happening, a light comes on in the coffin, and Lupin wakes up from his long, drug-induced sleep.

A flashback shows what really happened: After he was shot and fell into the sea, Lupin swam to the bottom where a partner was waiting for him. Lupin revealed that he was wearing a bulletproof vest. He removed his clothes, then put on a filmy bodysuit with pictures of bullet holes on them. The partner put the bulletproof vest in the case and gave him a bottle of special drugs, all of which Lupin swallowed after he put his clothes back on. With a gasp, Lupin passed out almost immediately after taking the pills and floated to the surface, delirious.

Lupin is happy to see Fujiko, but she's offended by the inscription on his tombstone.

Later, Fujiko and a guard release Jigen and Goemon. As they drive the confused pair in a police car, the guard returns their weapons and reveals himself to be Lupin in disguise.

He explains that the night Puma blew up his own yacht, he saw another, smaller boat leaving, and that it tied up next to another boat.

Out on this boat, Puma gets the money from Tiger and then kills him. Suddenly, Puma hears footsteps approaching, and Lupin's voice. He turns to fire, but Lupin hits him in the shoulder before blowing up the boat and escaping.

Mistakes[]

  • When Lupin is on the cliff, his jacket is completely open and he has nothing over his shirt, suggesting he had the bulletproof vest under it. When he's underwater, the bulletproof vest is suddenly over his shirt without explanation.
  • The depressions on Lupin's bulletproof vest show that he was hit five times on his left side and twice on his right. However, the bodysuit he's given has two pictures of bullet holes on the left side and five on the right.
  • Lupin is hit seven times by Puma, yet when he's underwater his shirt only has three holes in it when he's putting it back on.
  • While he's underwater, the bullet holes on Lupin's jacket appear and disappear between scenes.
  • When Lupin is about to escape the boat, his right ear is uncolored for a frame.

Translation Notes[]

In the English dub, Puma was given the full name Enrico Mortenegra. His surname is a combination of Portuguese and Spanish words which translate out to mean Black Death. In the Japanese original and the Italian dub, his real name is unknown. The dub also added that he was wanted in 17 countries for capital crimes.

In the Japanese original, the inscription on Lupin's tombstone reads, "Here rests Lupin the Third, with love for Fujiko Mine... Just kidding." In the English dub it's "Here lies poor Lupin, Fujiko-less. At least when she visits, he can look up her dress."

The English dub plays up the tsundere aspect of Zenigata's personality; as he's crying over Lupin's body, he outright says, "I love you". A few seconds later he says, "How could you do this to me? I hate you! No, I don't! I don't! I'm sorry!"

In the Japanese original, the mortician tells Fujiko he put a secret oxygen supply into Lupin's coffin so he won't suffocate when he wakes up. He makes no mention of this in the English dub, but instead assures her that "a body in this kind of suspended animation requires very little oxygen".

Notes[]

  • This episode ranked #15 in the Lupin III Best Selection rerun of favorite episodes, as chosen by Japanese fans.
  • Lupin's eyes are closed in the flashback when he floats to the surface, but they're open when Jigen and Goemon pull him out of the water, although this is probably because he's heavily delirious from the sleeping pills he took as part of his plan and hasn't completely lost consciousness yet.
  • Richard Epcar, the English dub's director and the voice of Jigen, reads aloud the English version of the inscription on Lupin's tombstone.
  • For some reason, while Lupin is stretching and yawning, the scenery behind him changes from the brown of the inside of his casket to the green of the ground at night.
