Censorship[]
Italian[]
While it is unknown whether the original airing had this scene, the scene where Lupin figures out that the woman that he invited was Melon was cut out. This was cut in not just the TV airings but also VHS and DVD releases. It is unknown whether it is lost due to the cut or was never dubbed.
The missing lines are:
Lupin: Right Melon-chan? |
(Jingle) |
Jigen: What? Did you say Melon? |
(Music) |
Melon: Lupin, you already knew? |
Lupin: Of course. Unlike Jigen, I never forget a woman. |
Melon: Then let's continue together like this, hand to hand, to prison. |
Lupin: Why are you being silly? |
In the Italian Blu-ray, this scene was restored what appears to be using the dubbed script however since the voice actors passed away, unknown voice actors voiced the missing lines doing impressions of Lupin, Jigen and Melon. This means that it is one of the few times that Roberto Del Giudice and Sandro Pellegrini doesn't voice Lupin and Jigen in Part 2 in Italian. Due to this replacement, the jingle and the music is missing during this scene and suddenly comes back when it switches back to the original voice actors.
French[]
Due to copyright issues regarding Arsène Lupin, Melon Ganimard had her surname and the link to her grandfather Inspector Ganimard removed in the French dub.
Notes[]
- The name "Deka Melon" is a pun. "Deka" is a slang term for police detective in Japanese. Written another way, however, it is short for "dekai" which means large. "Melon" is a slang term for a woman's breasts. Thus, "Deka Melon" is a pun meaning "Big Tits," and "Onna Deka Melon" can be interpreted as "A Woman with Big Tits," or possibly "A Woman's Big Tits."
- This episode marks the second appearance of Ganimard's descendants, after Part 1 Episode 19. No mention is made of this previous encounter, however.
- The episode is based on New Lupin III Chapter 3. While the two are different, it shares some elements. In both Zenigata gets a partner to work with called Melon, Lupin writes on peoples backs, Jigen uses the telescope to spy out and both Melons figured out that the officer is Lupin in disguise.
- This was the first episode of the English dub (outside of Part 2 Episode 3 that was not aired on Adult Swim) that was released and made onto DVD. Eventually the episode appeared on streaming services such as Hulu and Crunchyroll in the US. At one point TMS had uploaded the episode on their account in English onto YouTube however this was later removed.
- The Geneon title is a reference to the film Revenge of the Nerds.
- In the Italian dub when Lupin meets Melon who had arrived at his hideout, he has a different lighter tone voice compared to his regular voice for unknown reasons.
- Unlike Arsène Lupin, the original Inspector Ganimard never had his first name revealed (it's "Justin").
- While it is revealed that Detective Melon is simply Fujiko in disguise, Detective Melon is an actual person that even later appeared in an episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 5.
