Two-Faced Lupin is the 16th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.
Synopsis[]
Lupin seems to suffer from transformation sickness, in which one changes into another, cruel personality, and commits crimes repeatedly, but has absolutely no memory of what happened during that time. After numerous crimes not worthy of the name of Lupin, the man himself, having completely lost his self-confidence, even contemplates taking his own life, in his depression, but due to various factors, cannot succeed at dying. It turns out that someone disguised as Lupin has been committing the crime and conspiring with a doctor to trick the real Lupin into believing that he is suffering from transformation sickness.
Long Summary[]
A wealthy man named Fugo keeping a gem called the Star of Versailles gets a note from Lupin III that he'll be coming around to steal it. He calls Zenigata in about the note. Zenigata notes that Lupin is a gentleman who keeps his word. After he leaves, Fugo runs into a man wearing Lupin's clothes and imitating his voice, who shoots him before stealing the Star of Versailles.
The next morning, Lupin and his gang watch the news on TV and note with confusion that Zenigata is angrier than usual. Jigen and Goemon tell Lupin they found his fingerprints at the scene. Lupin replies that those fingerprints must have been faked, and that they've done the same before. He decides they should move onto their next heist, of a ruby called the African Queen, owned by a man named Zenial.
That night, Fujiko is over at Zenial's place, hoping to steal the ruby herself. However, the Lupin stand-in gets there before her and kills Zenial. She sees the murderer before he leaves: he has Lupin's clothes and voice, but a different face.
Fujiko confronts Lupin at a cafe about the two murders. Lupin insists he's innocent, but Fujiko is skeptical, given that he's a master of disguise who can change his appearance at any time. She leaves in a huff, with Lupin outraged that she tried to steal the African Queen without them. Soon, a psychiatrist named Dr. Nomil, who Jigen knows well, comes by. Nomil introduces himself as an old friend of Lupin II and offers to diagnose Lupin III, which the young man agrees to.
That night, Lupin goes to Nomil's place. Nomil offers Lupin a drink, and says he's going to bring food as well. He goes into a private study and beckons Jigen and Goemon to come out from the curtain they've been hiding behind. They look into a one-way mirror and see Lupin clutching his head and turn into the murderer. Nomil explains that Lupin has "Disguise Syndrome", a disease which causes him to change his appearance and personality at a certain time, which in this case is midnight, and commits murders he has no memory of afterwards. He tells Jigen and Goemon that it's best that they leave Lupin with him and they go back to the hotel. They do so. Nomil's accomplice, the Lupin impersonator, asks if everything went according to plan. Nomil says it did. The Lupin impersonator brings out the film used to trick Jigen and Goemon. The two conspirators check on Lupin, whose drink Nomil spiked with sleeping pills, and confirm that they can move onto the next step of the plan.
Lupin wakes up in his hotel room and finds the corpse of a young woman in his closet. Terrified, he checks the footage of the camera he set up in his room and sees himself changing into someone else. He goes back to see Dr. Nomil, who tells him that he has Disguise Syndrome. Lupin leaves, depressed.
At his room, Lupin sits listlessly in his bed and watches the news. Jigen tells Lupin to stop upsetting himself. Lupin begs Jigen and Goemon to kill him so that the murders will stop. They agree to, and after a couple of attempts they give up, saying the whole thing is pointless.
Out in a small clearing, Lupin tries to hang himself. Fujiko arrives just in time and saves him. She knows Lupin doesn't just kill without cause, and she knows a way to prove it.
Back at the hotel, she ties him to a chair, declaring that if he is the murderer he says he is, she'll kill him and herself. Midnight strikes. Lupin begins to writhe in his seat. She cocks his gun, ready to aim. Lupin sneezes, and nothing else happens. Fujiko realizes that Lupin has been tricked.
Elsewhere, Nomil tricks Zenigata with the footage from Lupin's hotel room, and the detective falls for it.
At a cafe, as the conspirators discuss their getaway plans, Lupin spies on them.
Disguised as Dr. Nomil, Lupin leads Zenigata to Nomil's house, where he thinks he sees Lupin and Jigen turning into Nomil and the Lupin stand-in. Zenigata arrests them. Lupin and Fujiko, who had put special film in Zenigata's binoculars, watch the police go. Fujiko notes that it's 12:00. Lupin pretends to transform as a way to kiss Fujiko. She slaps him away, telling him it's 12 noon, and walks away. Lupin offers to buy her lunch.

Mistakes[]
- When Lupin seems to be transforming, he drops his glass and it's heard smashing. Then when he's sleeping on the table, his glass is near his hand. Then when Dr. Normil and the Fake Lupin enter the room, the glass is gone.
- How did Jigen and Goemon not hear Lupin hitting the table as he passed out, even as it was switched with film?
- Lupin only set up one camera in his hotel room, yet the footage showed the scene from multiple angles.
- Several news items show the Fake Lupin committing crimes and generally being cruel in broad daylight, which should have caused Lupin and his gang to realize they've been tricked, given that they've been told that Lupin only changes at midnight.
- When Lupin is passed out over the table, his jacket is fully on. Then when the scene cuts to Dr. Normil and the Fake Lupin entering the room, his jacket is still fully on. And when it cuts back to him, his jacket has slipped off his right shoulder.
- The scene where the doctor tricks Lupin's friends into thinking he's transforming takes place at night. But when the Fake Lupin comes out from behind the curtain, the room is lit up like daytime.
- When Lupin falls to the ground after Fujiko saves him, the rope around his neck is gone. It's back around his neck when he sits up.
Differences Between Manga & Anime[]
- The second murder plays out differently in the anime; Zenial is with Fujiko when Fake Lupin comes in, pretending to be Lupin, and blows him up in another room, with Fujiko listening outside. In the manga, Fake Lupin comes in pretending to be a journalist and tries to get an interview from Zenigata, who orders him to leave. Then he smashes a window to distract Zenigata by claiming Lupin left through there, then blew up the safe with the Inspector's client inside.
- The episode removes the gag of Lupin and the psychiatrist turning into a woman.
Translation Notes[]
Fugo was renamed to Beaucoup in the English dub.
The English dub had renamed Disguise Syndrome to Hyde's Disease however the so-called symptom is mentioned less and rewritten lines that had them such as when Fujiko is looking after Lupin. The reference to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was also dropped. The English dub adds some more dialogue between Dr. Normil and Fake Lupin just before the eyecatch.
In the Japanese original, "Lupin's" crimes that the TV reporter mentioned that he murdered 12 people, taking 350 million francs in stolen cash, stealing 200 million francs worth of jewelry and one ice cream cone. This was simplified in the English dub to murders, robberies, hi-jackings and stealing ice cream, the latter was cut off when Jigen switched off the TV.
Dr. Nomil asks for a coffee in the Japanese original while in the English dub, it was changed to a double cappuccino.
In the English dub, after tricking Jigen and Goemon with film, Dr. Normil quips to Fake Lupin, "I could be Geffen, and you Katzenberg." This is a reference to two of the creators of Dreamworks SKG, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg.
In the French dub, Lupin says "Hello?" when answering the phone. He doesn't do that in other versions.
Notes[]
- The episode is an adaptation of the Lupin III New Adventures manga chapter The Better Half / Jekyll Lupin and Hyde Lupin. Dr. Nomil was originally nameless in the manga.
- As mentioned on the cast list, the voice actors of Lupin perform Fake Lupin's voice during when Lupin steals from Fugo, Zenial and tries to break the safe but is caught by Fujiko.
- Lupin insists throughout this episode and others in Part 2 that he's not a killer. While he doesn't kill indiscriminately and mainly targets criminals and assassins, he doesn't always do so in self-defence. In Part 1 Episode 1 he hit some of Mr. X's men on the head with a hammer and electrocuted the rest in a flooded hall. In Part 1 Episode 4 he strangled three guards while pulling off a heist, although he insisted he wasn't killing them, and sent an innocent guard to the electric chair. In Part 1 Episode 5 he killed the assassin Sandayu Momochi as he was fleeing Goemon's vengeful wrath. In Part 2 Episode 62 he would kill Sister Lavina as she was fleeing in a bubble. And in Part 2 Episode 79 it was revealed in a flashback that he killed the jeweler Momanitt Mulchy in a duel, although Lupin claimed the man was a rogue and he doesn't remember the incident anyway. He has also been indirectly if inadvertently responsible for the possible deaths and injuries of a number of innocent bystanders, such as when he blew up the Scorpion cars in Part 1 Episode 1 and fought Goemon on a highway in Part 1 Episode 5.
- The episode is rated 45th according to the staff at TMS.[1]
- The outtakes of the episode have the actors making jokes about how Dr. Nomil's head looks like a penis.
- The blonde woman Fake Lupin murders, Francine, isn't given a name in the English dub.
- When a bound Lupin sneezes, there's a buzzing sound heard, suggesting that a bug had tickled his nose.
