Translation Notes[]
The English dub had rewritten a majority of the script of the episode to add extra dialogue, jokes, references to Hasbro games such as Twister and Hungry Hungry Hippos, simplify the dialogue. The English dub has the announcer continuing to speak as Zenigata runs for the blimp, Zenigata saying "Damn it all, I just..." as he jumps for the stairs, and the announcer making a witty comment as the Inspector is nearly crushed by the steps.
In the Japanese original as well as the other dubs, Gabriel XII only mentions that he comes from Austria while in the English dub he adds from Großclucker. This is a giant chicken joke, a reference to Part 2 Episode 10 where Lupin made chicken jokes to George Marshall. Zenigata also has a foot fungus in the English dub.
The English dub has Fujiko, as part of her disguise, speaking in a heavy Austrian accent; ostensibly she is referencing Peter Lorre, the same actor Jigen would imitate in Part 2 Episode 34
Notes[]
- The plotline influenced Part 5 Episode 17.
- The episode is inspired by the 1976 movie Murder by Death and is about how a group of Detectiv Character archetypes get invited from a exentric millionaire to solve a murder. At midnight he will get killed by one of them and they have to find out who it was. At midnight the lights get turned off and when they get back on he is dead and the Murder is one of them. -The character of Philip Archer is inspired by the character Sam Diamond in the movie who is like Archer characterized as an alcohol, gun and blonde women loving man, who works as a American private detective. - From 07:35 - 08:00 the detectives get spyed on by Count Gabriel XIII, before he appears, and talks to them at the dining table via a deer head on the wall. This is also found in the movie where it is a similar scene in the dining hall but the deer head is a moose head.
- The Hendenburg built by Gabriel who is a German is inspired by the German zeppelin the Hindenburg which both had an explosion on board which caused the zeppelin to crash and burn.
- When the Hendenburg takes off from Germany the commentator says "Heil Hitler". Doing the Nazi version of a Roman salute has been a criminal offense since the end of WWII in Germany. And also just saying "Heil Hitler" can have consequences in Germany, especially at a public event.
