Translation Notes[]
When the pilot, Lupin, Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko in disguise boarded onto the Concorde and thanked Inspector Koichi Zenigata, in the Japanese original they were speaking in French. On the English Pioneer translation as well as the Italian Blu-ray, this was kept in French to emphasize that they were speaking in French with an additional translation into English and Italian. There are slight differences between the two with the English subtitles using vouz (outside of je vous aime), plait and hello while the Italian subtitles used vous, plaît and allô. The English subtitles was also censored as it left out the French swear that Zenigata had made however the Italian Blu-ray had repeated "bastardi" twice, a word that does not exist in French.
This was rewritten in both English and Italian, the former had kept "comment allez-vous?" and "oui" while the latter had kept "allô" and "adieu". French was still spoken however different phrases were spoken and less than the Japanese original. The English dub has Zenigata mangle his French and first greet a disguised Lupin, then Fujiko with Bon Jovi.
In the Japanese original, Fujiko called Zenigata the "ultimate pervert". This was dropped in the English dub.
The English dub has Fujiko shouting protests as Lupin drunkenly drives along the road.
The English dub also adds dialogue between Lupin and Fujiko after the police and flight crew are knocked out. Lupin says "Go ahead, say it", and Fujiko says "You're a genius, Lupin." It adds a line of dialogue where Lupin says "Okay, easy now", and then "Pardon me, Inspector" as he removes the special case from the lap of a sleeping Zenigata.
In the Japanese original, Zenigata's name is constantly mispronounced as "Zenigame" (pond turtle). In the English dub, the Bordeaux guard calls him "Origami", "Epiglottis", "Terracotta", "Pennsylvania" and "Sanitation".
In the Spanish dub, Zenigata audibly whistles when he sees the disguised Fujiko.
In the Japanese original, Lupin complains that he and his gang got tricked. In the English dub, Zenigata mangles the phrase "Hoisted by your own petard", to Lupin's chagrin.
The English dub has extra dialogue when Fujiko notices Goemon watching her get into the wine barrel.
In the original Japanese version, the American President is meant to be Jimmy Carter, who was still the President at the time of airing. In the English dub, the President was given dialogue to better resemble Bill Clinton, who was the most recent Democratic President of the United States in order to align with Carter's political alignment.
Notes[]
- The English dub title is a play on the term "The Night Before Christmas".
- Wine is not as flammable as one may think, due to its relatively low alcohol content. Lupin wouldn't have done any harm to Zenigata or the police unless if the wine was boiling. Lupin probably knew this and was just scaring Zenigata. On the other hand, anything can happen in animation, and Lupin might as well have set fire to wine, instead of dousing the flame in a realistic situation.
