You're a Cat, I'm a Dried Bonito is the 106th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.
Synopsis[]
Vivian wants to become a star so badly that she's even willing to become Lupin's victim if it'll make her famous, but a slip of the tongue causes her to say "Lupin stole a cat that eats pencil shavings." Lupin, infuriated at the grade-school newspaper report, begins a search for the cat in question, feeling disgraced at having been accused of stealing something so stupid. The duo of opportunists known as Bucky and Butcher soon get mixed up in the quagmire as well, but does this cat really exist?
Long Summary[]
In New York, Vivian Lee walks down a back alley and gets unwanted attention from the men. She passes by two local con men, Bucky and Butcher T. Marchin. Lupin III bumps into them while running away from Koichi Zenigata. Vivian tries to impress the manager with her dancing but she proves to be terrible. Bucky and Butcher end up in a scuffle and catch Lupin as he passes by, and Zenigata continues the chase. This gives Vivian an idea.
Vivian holds a press event claiming Lupin broke into her apartment and stole a cat worth a million dollars. Nobody is interested except for a little boy. She tells him him that it was a cat that ate pencil shavings. Lupin is outraged by this and thinks it damages his reputation. However, he's up for the challenge.
Vivian tries reporting the incident to Zenigata, who knows that Lupin wouldn't do a thing like that and doesn't care about the cat, only in catching Lupin. As Zenigata is writing down information, Vivian realizes what she got into and tells the fourth wall she wishes she hadn't lied. When Zenigata asks her if she said something, Vivian denies it. The police then show Vivian various cats, but none are the one she's looking for.
Lupin gets his gang to go out and look for the cat. Goemon humiliates himself by going around town holding a sign saying "Have you seen a cat that eats pencil shavings?". Fujiko asks around, but with no luck. Jigen goes to the rooftop to plant a trap full of pencil shavings to catch a cat, then sits behind a chimney to wait. The cat doesn't show up, Jigen gets bored and he ends up taking a nap on the roof; a catnap, so to speak. As Bucky and Butcher bicker, Lupin cycles by asking anyone if they've seen a cat that eats pencil shavings. This gives them an idea; they find a cat that eats such a thing, then give it to Lupin for a reward.
Goemon, Fujiko and Jigen give up. Bucky and Butcher tell Lupin that they found such a creature. Lupin grabbed the white cat and ran off with Bucky and Butcher, he was driving as Bucky wanted the money in advance but he says that it comes later. They arrive at Vivian's apartment, and she lets slip that there's no such thing as a cat that eats pencil shavings until she sees the cat eating the pencil that dropped out of Butcher's coat.
Bucky and Butcher snatch up the cat, thinking they can breed a whole bunch that eat pencil shavings and sell them. The duo fall and Vivian catches the cat. However, the cat takes a liking to Lupin and won't leave him alone no matter what. Eventually, Lupin decides the cat is better off with him than with the other three. He hides with the cat in a building. The cat meows incessantly. Lupin tells it to be quiet, but figures it's hungry and gives it the pencil to chew on. Lupin wondered about the pencil shavings and tries one. He realizes it's actually a bonito flake.
In a phone box, Lupin contacted Jigen but is spotted by the three pursuers and flees. Vivian contacts Zenigata about the cat and he arrives at, an old warehouse where Lupin is hiding with the cat. Lupin tells the cat to leave but it refuses and happily sits on his leg. Fujiko and Jigen go to the supermarket to get some tuna and return to the hideout, making pencil-shaped sticks out of them and use them to attract the cats.
Zenigata tells Lupin he has ten minutes to leave the building with the cat and to give up. Vivian wonders about the cat but Zenigata doesn't care. Once the countdown is up, the police fire rockets at the warehouse. Zenigata and the officers are unable find Lupin or the cat; Lupin had disguised himself as an officer. Vivian begs "Dorogata" to find the cat but Zenigata isn't interested and retreats.
Vivian, Bucky and Butcher go to the warehouse to look for the cat and find Lupin in his officer disguise with the cat under his cap. Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko arrive with the cats. Vivian runs away. Bucky and Butcher then sell "pencil shaving" eating cats for 50 cents on the street.

Mistakes[]
- 4:45-4:47 - Butcher misspelled his name as "Buccher". "marchin" is also a translation mistake as it can be translated as Martin or Marten however secondary sources such as the Discotek credits or Lupin III DVD Collection do not have his surname listed.
- Outside of the supermarket, it says "Japanes" rather than Japanese. Also it says "Toies" rather than toys.
- Jigen set his trap on a rooftop without thinking about the possibility that the wind would blow the pencil shavings away.
Translation Notes[]
In the English Discotek translation, dried bonito was simplified as dried fish.
In the Japanese original, some characters speak English:
- A kid goes towards Goemon and says "Aren't you crazy?"
- Jigen saying "Meow" to get the attention of cats. The Japanese onomatopoeia for a cat call is "Nyan".
Lupin says "Fujiko-chan, Goemon-chan, Jigen-chan". On the English Discotek translation, Fujiko-chan was translated as Fujicakes as it is Lupin's English nickname for Fujiko however the titles for Goemon and Jigen were dropped. The Italian Blu-ray also dropped the title for Fujiko.
In the Spanish dub, Lupin's dialogue overlaps Butcher and Bucky's when they see him searching for the cat. When Jigen is preparing to lay his trap, he calls out "Little cat?" instead of meowing.

On the Italian TV airings, there is minor censorship in the episode removing or minimizing Japanese text.
- When Goemon is holding a sign saying "Have you seen a cat that eats pencil shavings?", it is slightly edited to focus on the LOOK! part of the sign.
- The scene Goemon and Fujiko put the sign and the papers on the floor, there are freeze frames and delays of the floor for timing purposes. When Jigen puts the basket on the floor however, the Japanese papers and sign reappear.
- There is a freeze frame outside of the supermarket despite saying what it means underneath in English.

- In Japan, this episode along with Part 2 Episode 78, Part 2 Episode 117 and Part 2 Episode 128 are nicknamed the "Broadway series".
- The song playing when the cat is munching on the "pencil" and the cats are after the bonito is "Neko Funjatta" (I Stepped On the Cat), a traditional song originally known as Flohwalzer and has multiple names around the world.
- The address written on Butcher T. Marchin's bank receipt as "Suginamiku Narita Higashi" despite being set in the US. This is the Naritahigashi district in Suginami-ku located in Tokyo. Suginami city is also the home to various animation studios such as Oh! Production and Sunrise however the animation studio located at Naritahigashi that was used for the episode is unknown.
