Long Summary[]

The first episode of the second series opens with an invitation to Fujiko (who just came from stealing a wedding ring from two guys on a Hawaiian beach trying to propose to her), Jigen (who's living in Sydney, Australia and showing up a group of skeet shooters with his sharpshooting skills), and Goemon (who was last seen in Hong Kong, kicking the asses of several Chinese thugs) from Lupin to reunite with him on board a luxury cruise ship five years after the gang's previous adventure. Lupin, of course makes a grand (slightly failed) entrance via parachute. Later, as the gang dines together, Lupin presents the fact that he did not send the others their invitations, and that his own was sent in Fujiko's name. Zenigata, tipped off to the gang's reunion and recently promoted to the ICPO, also makes his presence known. Shortly thereafter, dinner is interrupted by a booby trap that crushes the table. The gang decides to investigate further.

Shipboard activities thereafter are laced with hazards. Jigen goes to the ship's dentist to have a sore tooth looked at, only for another patient to interrupt his exam and accidentally take the venomous snake meant for him. Goemon's massage is given by a burly thug who seems only interested in killing him, and Fujiko's swim in the ship's pool takes a deadly turn, with Lupin pulling her out of the jaws of a shark only just in time. The gang discusses the death traps, and Lupin finally puts two and two together: their foe is the Scorpion Gang, wanting revenge for their defeat in the first episode of the first series.

As the group attends a fancy dinner, their table is spirited away to a hidden hold. There, the leader of the Scorpion Gang, now healed and rebuilt into an invincible superman, promises revenge and challenges the gang to defeat him, providing them with weapons, guns, cars, and other implements of death. Jigen and Goemon are quickly defeated, but Lupin takes advantage of their distraction to think up a plan with Fujiko; Lupin uses one car to knock down a set of electric lights, while Fujiko uses another to start a fire, triggering the ship's sprinkler system. The hold fills with water, and Lupin shoots the damaged lights down to zap the Scorpion leader with electricity. The gang escapes while the wounded Scorpion decides to take out the whole ship, and hopefully Lupin's gang with it. The ship self-destructs.

Lupin and his friends are not so easily taken out, however, escaping on a raft made of various scraps from the ship's ruins. As they sail away, Zenigata, who managed to escape the explosion via sea turtle, finds them in the ocean, and the chase begins anew...

Censorship[]

  • On the Youtube version uploaded by TMS as part of their anniversary, the scene where Fujiko is in the shower has been darkened. This is due to their filters as the episode was originally on there but then got removed so this is a change for the reupload. No other version has been affected.

French[]

The French dub masters have removed all the Japanese text but unlike the Italian Mediaset TV airings where freeze frames or the title card cut off the text, it was completely removed.

  • The intro of the episode was cut out due to Japanese text of the locations, "Lupin's" letter and Fujiko being in the shower. The French dub starts where the Sirloin departs from Lisbon.
  • A small cut where Lupin gets introduced after parachuting his way to the cruise ship.
  • Due to copyright reasons regarding the song that Goemon listens to on the radio, the original song is replaced with Sunset Flight. [2]

Mistakes[]

  • On the English masters used for the Pioneer/Geneon dub and streaming sites, Sydney is spelt as Sidney. This does not affect any other master as the Japanese is not translated and is baked in, the translation error was fixed on the Discotek DVD release. The Sidney error was retained on the Italian subtitles on the Blu-ray due to using the English Pioneer translation as a base.
  • When Jigen looks at the information about the ship, Hull is Holl, Restaurant is Restraunt. Also as he presses the button, a section called "Listni" appears that wasn't there before.

Translation Notes[]

  • The English dub adds a line from Lupin about how Zenigata has no choice but to "take a load off" on the Sirloin as he removes his hand from the cuff.

Notes[]

  • This episode is a direct sequel to Part 1 Episode 1 and includes flashback footage from said episode. The footage had the soundtrack redone by having the engine noise, removing the voices and Afro "Lupin '68". The episode is also set five years after the events of Lupin the 3rd Part 1, there was also a real life gap of five years between Part 1 and Part 2.
  • The idea of a reunion was based on New Lupin III Chapter 1 and the name came from the volume release of Lupin III Chapter 1.
  • This episode ranked #8 in the Lupin III Best Selection rerun of favorite episodes, as chosen by Japanese fans.
  • Unlike future episodes of the English Geneon dub where the episode name was changed to have a reference, the title came from the Italian dub and may have came from TMS in the 1980s. There was also no Japanese title on the Pioneer DVD release due to no preview and listing the original title started from Part 2 Episode 8 however on the Discotek release, it was given the title "Lupin the Third's Gallant Appearance".
  • On some versions of the International masters, there is a red filter during the flashback with Mister X. It is unknown why.
  • The preview for this episode was aired on the final episode of "Ganso Tensai Bakabon" on September 26, 1977. It starts off with Yasuo Yamada imitating Bakabon's Papa before Lupin explains what happens. Currently it has not been featured on any known home media releases of Lupin the 3rd Part 2.
  • The attempt on Jigen's life in this episode led to his crippling fear of dentists.
  • The episode marks Makio Inoue's debut as Goemon.
  • The episode takes artistic liberties for comedy's sake. Sharks neither eat people, nor are able to survive in chlorine.
  • This episode marks the first time in animation that Lupin and Zenigata work together to defeat a common enemy, something later shown to much grander effect in the theatrical films and TV specials as well as later TV series installments.
