"A Wolf Calls a Wolf" is the 7th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 1.
Synopsis[]
Three scrolls contain the secret of creating a blade like the Zantetsuken. Lupin III wants to steal them as a matter of family pride because his grandfather, Arsène Lupin, stole them back in the 19th century. Lupin's father stole a dagger from a swordsman that was forged using the same process. The swordsman challenged Lupin II to a duel and lost. But, he managed to steal the scrolls for himself. Now, Lupin III plans to steal the scrolls back, but to do so, he must face Goemon Ishikawa XIII and Fujiko Mine, who have their own plans for acquiring the scrolls.

Lupin and Goemon become friends
Mistakes[]
Due to the changeover of directors between Masaaki Ōsumi to Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, the episode had coloring errors and dialogue not lip syncing.
- At 02:14-02:24, the top of Daisuke Jigen's hat is colored silver.
- 02:19-02:21 - Jigen speaks without his mouth moving. This affects the Japanese original and the 1987 Italian dub, the 1979 Italian dub corrects this by Jigen not saying anything.
- 06:58-07:00 - Lupin III speaks without his mouth moving. This affects the Japanese original and the 1979 Italian dub, the 1987 Italian dub altered the dialogue to make him laugh instead to correct the error.
- 10:11-10:11 - Lupin has brown hair instead of black.
- At 10:48-10:51 and 11:12-11:16, Fujiko Mine has her Ginco Fujinami black hair style while the rest of the scenes, she reverts back to her usual character design with her brown hair.
There are scenes where the commander has no pupils in his eyes, when he talks to Goemon in his cliff-side house and the battle between him and Lupin II.
Translation Notes[]
- In the English Discotek translation, Kunisadagumi is translated as "Kunisada family" while an English fan translation translated this as "Kunisada group". Hanji of Annaka's title was translated both as top official and VIP in the Discotek translation while it was translated as great leader in the fan translation. Jōshū where he lived was the short form name of the Kōzuke Province, now know as the Gunma Prefecture. Annaka was a domain of the province and is now a city.

- This was the first episode where Hayao Miyazaki was involved with the series at the request from Yasuo Otsuka however he was originally uncredited. Miyazaki worked on the battle between Lupin III and Jito-Ryu Commander as well as Lupin in his split Mercedes Benz SSK chasing after Goemon Ishikawa XIII.
- Due to the director changeover, the scenes where Lupin III and Daisuke Jigen discuss about the scrolls as well as Lupin driving to meet Goemon had recycled animation. A clip from Part 1 Episode 5 was also used.
- It was also the first animated work directed by Miyazaki.
- Lupin III calls Fujiko Mine, Fujiko-kun in the episode rather than the later nickname Fujiko-chan.
- When Fujiko attacks Lupin with the knife while he was using the PRIVATE paper to spy on her, it is written in English. It includes the alphabet, "BEAUTIFUL", "SEX", "I CAN SPEAK ENGLISH VERY WELL", "TOKYO MOVIE PRODUCTION", "HAPPY NEW YEAR" and "MERRY X MAS" however the rest is gibberish.
- Steve Kramer (Lupin II) previously voiced a parody of Lupin III in Battle Game in 5 Seconds.
