"One Chance for a Prison Break" is the 4th episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 1.
Synopsis[]
Lupin III and Fujiko Mine successfully pull off a heist until Koichi Zenigata manages to shoot Lupin with a tranquilizer dart and hauls him off to jail. Despite Fujiko's best efforts, she cannot break Lupin out of prison, and Daisuke Jigen provides no help, claiming that Lupin can leave whenever he wants. After one year, Lupin's still in jail with his execution date getting closer. Will Lupin be able to get out of jail?

Differences Between Manga & Anime[]
This episode is adapted from Lupin III Chapter 2, itself a parody of the third Arsène Lupin story, "The Escape of Arsène Lupin". As is the case with adaptations, some changes had to be made while adapting the chapter:
- A gag was cut where a naked Lupin's penis shrinks from the cold air.
- Wakou, a priest, was replaced with Daisuke Jigen, who at the time did not exist in the manga, wearing a priest disguise.
- A scene where Lupin III makes out with an imaginary officer for his "last request" was cut.
- Fujiko Mine and the treasure plotline was also added to explain his arrest.
Censorship[]
Italian / Spanish[]
In the 1987 Italian redub, some scenes have been cut.[3] The following have been cut:
- The scene in which Lupin III hangs the three guards.
- Lupin being stripped in prison and Koichi Zenigata smiles at him.
- The guard dressed as Lupin on the electric chair getting electrocuted.
This also applies to the Spanish Telecinco dub since they used the same masters.
Japanese[]
In TV airings that appeared from the 1980s, some words were cut out due to TV broadcasting standards and no longer allowed to be used. 気違い (kichigai, translates as lunatic or madness depending on context) is considered an offensive word for mentally disabled people and is considered a banned word on TV due to the events of airing an episode of New Ronin of the Wilderness on May 28, 1974. VAP puts a warning that it is considered offensive however it was a product of its time with no intention to offend people (this is uncut on DVD, Blu-ray and streaming services).
- At 10:52, the Prison Guard calls Lupin "バカ 気違い" (baka kichigai). On TV airings the second word is silenced. On the Discotek English translation this is translated as "Idiot! You're crazy". The Lupin III H adaptation changed this to "バカ!!" (baka) that translates as "Idiot!!".
Mistakes[]
- Fujiko's outfit changes three times in the first act. When the gang are preparing for the heist, she's wearing a blue dress. When she arrives in the helicopter, she's in a turquoise shirt. Then when she tries to save Lupin, she's in a black minidress.
- When Lupin is cornered, his lips move before he draws his gun but he doesn't say anything. The English dub fixes it by having him threateningly saying "okay" before drawing.
Translation Notes[]
- In the Japanese original, after Lupin strangles the guards, he says "I won't kill you." In the English dub, he assures that the wire is "Not too tight".
- In the Japanese original, Zenigata only yelps after his coat catches fire. In the English dub, he says "Hey, what's burning?"
- In the Japanese original Lupin says "If I'm here, who's in the electric chair?". In the English dub, he says "If I'm here, who's about to become a crispy critter?"
Notes[]
- The episode inspired Part 4 Episode 13.
- This episode was not part of the original 26 episode plan of the series unlike Part 1 Episode 1, Part 1 Episode 2 and Part 1 Episode 3, the latter as Episode 5.[4]
- As well as being adapted from Chapter 2, the beginning is inspired by Lupin III Chapter 13 .
- The episode establishes a unique relationship between Lupin and Zenigata in order to build a franchise out of the series. While the manga's Zenigata hates Lupin with every fiber of his being, the anime's Zenigata crows about execution, but over time realizes he prefers chasing Lupin to catching him, even having sort of an affection for him, and panics when someone doesn't break him out.
- In the English dub at 13:30, Zenigata is heard saying "Good Gravy!", a phrase notably used in the English dub of Part 2 Episode 29 as said by Dan Lorge.
- As noted on the Notes section of that specific episode, it was planned for that episode to be part of Part 1 as episode 21 before the changing of directors to Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata replacing it with Part 1 Episode 21.
