"Rescue of the Stubborn Tomboy!" is the 21st episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 1.

Rie Makita is being held captive though she does not realize it. She believes the man holding her is a friend of her father, Ken Makita. Lupin III shows up to rescue her. Rie does not want to be rescued by Lupin and does not understand why he is trying to. Lupin's father was a friend of Rie's father. The "friend" is Jooji Takigawa; he is holding Rie hostage in an attempt to get her father out of retirement to do his bidding.

- Originally in the script, Rie Makita was going to narrate her thoughts and feelings to the audience however when it came to the voice acting stage, these were dropped out.[1]

Uncle's subordinate, Sabu-chan jumped to the locomotive and came to help. But that aspect is not the face of the usual Sabu-chan.

- The unvoiced lines are also the only other reference of Sabu being mentioned outside of the train scene. While it isn't shown in the episode, Rie Makita has more respect for Lupin III in the script.
- In the script, the original intro was going to be the second intro with Lupin introducing the cast with Lupin the 3rd Theme 1 playing however the third Opening was used.

- Some content of this episode has been recorded in the Lupin III Original Soundtrack Drama-hen vinyl
- Lupin and Jigen display Zenigata's ability to blink without using their eyelids.
- This episode would mark the first time that Lupin would act on a much more noble cause, rescuing a young woman from inprisonment. Such behavior would later be shown on a more grand scale in The Castle of Cagliostro.
- Many ideas present in this episode would later be replicated in the film, notably the car chase early in the episode along the cliffside, Jigen shooting off the tires of George's truck from the roof of the Fiat 500, Lupin's history with the heroine's family, the train's breakdown, Rie's attempt to wake up Lupin from the height, George and his men shooting at both Lupin and Rie with machine guns, and his owning of a flying vehicle.
- Had the directors not changed, the original idea for episode 21 would been a very different episode. The script that would have been used would end up being reused as Part 2 Episode 29.
