"The Man They Called a Magician" is the 2nd episode of Lupin the 3rd Part 1.

Synopsis[]

Fujiko Mine has stolen something from a man named Pycal, and he wants it back. Normally, Lupin III would have no problem dealing with him, but Pycal can shoot flame from his hands, can walk on air, and can have bullets bounce right off of him!

Can Lupin III and Daisuke Jigen discover Pycal's secret before it is too late?!

Long Summary[]

Fujiko Mine has stolen pieces of film from Pycal, a man who is claimed to be a magician due to his ability to shoot fire from his fingertips, stand and walk in midair, and the fact he's unaffected by gunshots. While Lupin is preparing to have breakfast with Fujiko and Jigen, Pycal storms into Lupin's house demanding Fujiko Mine for what she stole from him. Fujiko is knocked unconscious and kidnapped by him.

In Pycal's cabin, the kidnapped Fujiko confesses hiding the film in Lupin's car. Lupin and Jigen have already discovered the film and struggle to decipher its meaning when Pycal shows up again, demanding the film be destroyed. Lupin III and Daisuke Jigen try shooting at him with numerous weapons from their handguns to a bazooka with little effect.

Lupin III eventually figures out how Pycal is able to shoot flames and stand in air, which were supposedly done with a concealed flamethrower and suspended glass panes. Fujiko reappears, but only to tease Lupin and say goodbye. Immediately after, Lupin hits his head and has an epiphany that the film slide shows a chemical formula. He then takes on Pycal with a chemical that repels fire, and defeats him while burning the film of the formula during the confrontation.

While it could be implied that Pycal died from burning and falling down a waterfall, he still seeks revenge in the 2002 OVA Return of the Magician.

Differences Between Manga & Anime[]

  • The scientist plotline and Fujiko Mine being in bed with Pycal got removed.
  • Pycal jumping into the car that Lupin III was driving was changed from the opening to happening later in the episode.
  • The gag at the ending was changed from Lupin's crotch being in pain to him hitting some glass while chasing after Fujiko Mine.
  • It's the second appearance of Daisuke Jigen while in the volume releases chronology, chapter 14 is the first appearance of Daisuke Jigen. However, in the original Weekly Manga Action print run, it was in chapter 10.

Censorship[]

Italian / Spanish[]

In the 1987 Italian redub, the scenes where Fujiko Mine was stripped by Pycal before being hung on a rope at a waterfall and Pycal's death were cut out.[3] This would also apply to the Spanish Telecinco dub since they used the same masters.

Translation Notes[]

In the Japanese original, there is no dialogue after Jigen removes the glass. In the English dub, he says, "I'm hungry" as he lies down, and Lupin replies "What's for dinner?" as a dragonfly lands on his finger.

In the Japanese original and the English dub, after Lupin tells Jigen to get up, the gunslinger replies "Too early". In the Latin Spanish dub he simply answers with an "M-mm" of refusal. In the German dub he says, "Mom, I'm too tired."

Notes[]

  • First mention of Lupin III and his dislike of octopus.
  • This is the only episode in the series to have a blue typed out title card since apart from Lupin the 3rd Part III where the red title cards are on the animation and the International version of Lupin the 3rd Part 4 used for the English and Italian dubs, most of the title cards are in black. While it is unknown what the production order is for the series, this hints to be the first to be animated due to the difference.
  • The episode recycles a couple of animations: one of Jigen practicing shooting, and another of him rolling over in his sleep on the couch.
  • Part 6 Episode 23 reveals the house to be in Mahiko Village, and hints that it's Lupin's ancestral home.
  • This is the only time in the series where the Fujiko in this episode is different from the previous one.
