Production[]

  • This was originally going to be Episode 4 in the original 26 episode plan under the title The Big Clock Sings a Poem of Killing (大時計は殺しの詩をうたう, Dai tokei wa koroshi no shi o utau) then changed to The Farewell Bell Rings at Three o'clock (三時に別れの鐘が鳴る, San ji ni wakare no kane ga naru)[2]
    • Ivanov was originally called Seikov (a word play on Seiko) while Silver Fox was originally Mrs. Kowalski after the area where she lived. It is unknown whether Baron Ukraine was connected to her during the original plans however he was just referred to as Baron.
  • When the series was put onto production and the script was finished, this was then moved down to Episode 5 and was going to have the same air date as Part 1 Episode 5. A full version of the original script before Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata made their changes was posted online.[3]
    • Daisuke Jigen was going to have more involvement in the episode.
    • Silver Fox was going to have a youngest son called Volvo and a Butler.
    • Cliff Flinch from Lupin III Chapter 75 was going to appear in the episode as he appeared in the finished script however in the original synopsis, Flinch from the final episode was instead mentioned. He also fights against Fujiko as part of a killing training center rather than teaming up with her and being Baron Ukraine's henchman.
    • The script was also going to adapt Lupin III Chapter 75 however the Baron took the place of Zenigata.
    • The scene where Lupin and Jigen are in the plane talking about the counterfeit money was originally done in a hideout and the money wasn't thrown towards a city.
    • Silver Fox was originally going to kill Lupin from advice given by the Baron and Volvo.
    • The episode was partly going to be set in a hotel unlike the finished episode where much of the episode was set in the clock tower.
    • Ivanov was originally forced to live as a slave for 60 years and does not love Silver Fox while she loved him, he left with Lupin. In the final episode, he wanted to be isolated, he loved Silver Fox and committed suicide by blowing up the clock tower when she died.
    • Fujiko was going to be tied up onto a cross, this idea was later used in Part III Episode 8.
  • The only parts of the script that remained in the final episode were:
    • The beginning of the episode before the title card where Lupin and Jigen get the briefcase.
    • A Rolls Royce had arrived at the clock tower.
    • Ivanov greeting Silver Fox.
    • Silver Fox talking with Inspector Zenigata who turned out to be Lupin.
    • Lupin and Jigen going into the Imperial Hotel.

Notes[]

  • The idea of Lupin III throwing out the counterfeit money was later reused in the movie The Castle of Cagliostro. Both media involved a clock tower in the plot.
  • The sound tape has been damaged in the Italian 1987 redub (and likely also the later made Spanish Telecinco dub, Latin America, Brazilian and French dubs). This doesn't affect the Japanese original, the 1979 Italian dub or the Spanish Animax dub (the latter was cleaned up):
    • When Koichi Zenigata comes to talk to Silver Fox, a swooping sound effect is heard and when Zenigata is talking to her showing the fireplace, laughter is played but sound like a sound effect rather than a voice actor.
    • As Lupin III shouts towards Fujiko regarding the photo of the clock tower, a strange whistling noise can be heard.
    • When Baron Ukraine talks to his henchmen to look for Lupin in the clock tower, the strange whistling noise returns.
