Differences Between Manga & Anime[]

  • The episode reused the idea of Lupin III being a race driver on a track with Koichi Zenigata being after him and Daisuke Jigen also being a driver.
  • Lupin III being on a motorcycle was also reused.
  • The plotline of Lupin III stealing from a bank while driving was dropped.
  • Multiple scenes were added:
    • Mister X using the race to kill Lupin III and kidnap Fujiko Mine,
    • Daisuke Jigen taking over the race while Lupin III deals with Mister X,
    • Fujiko Mine betraying everyone for her freedom.

Censorship[]

Italian/Spanish[]

In the 1987 Italian redub, nearly all of the torture scene with Fujiko was removed.[3] This also applies to the Spanish Telecinco dub since they used the same masters.

Mistakes[]

  • The Scorpion logo is spelled as "SCOPION". This mistake is retained in the OVA Is Lupin Still Burning? as a reference.
  • At 21:01, while Lupin III is blinking and his eyes are closed, he was drawn without eyebrows. This happens for two frames.
  • Mr. X begins his speech by addressing the "ladies and gentlemen", but when Fujiko is caught and when the hall is flooded, only male members of the Scorpion gang are visible.

Translation Notes[]

In the Japanese original, all Mr. X says as Lupin threatens him and his men is "Shoot him! Shoot him!" In the English dub, Mr. X screams, "Fire, you idiots!" as the men fire at Lupin and as Lupin lunges forward with the wires.

In the German dub, Lupin and Jigen give each other cute nicknames. Lupin calls Jigen "grumpy bear" and Jigen calls Lupin "pickle".

Notes[]

  • This was a loose adaption of Lupin III Chapter 53 and was also the basis of Part 2 Episode 11 and Part 2 Episode 73, and the OVA Is Lupin Still Burning?.
  • The Hida Speedway was based on the Fuji Speedway and the original layout of the course. It was not used in Formula One until 1976 and again in 1977 but with a different layout. After 1977, it was retired due to a crash that killed two spectators until 2007-2008 where it briefly returned.
  • This is the first episode of the franchise that uses the familiar typewriter styled title card where the writing is shown then the episode name in full appears. This would not return until Part 1 Episode 4. Part 1 Episode 2 (with a blue background) and Part 1 Episode 6 use a simple typewriter title card.
  • Due to that the Italian dub was originally aired on local TV channels, it meant that the premiere of the episode varied between regions of Italy. The first known airing was September 3, 1979 when it aired on GBR, a TV channel based in Rome. The dub was also produced in Rome. It was also the first show on Telenuovo when it launched on November 12, 1979 in the Veneto region airing at 5PM[4]. Currently the other regions are unknown.
  • An English dub of this episode was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lupin the 3rd Part 1, handled by Sentai and TMS Entertainment. This premiered in selected cinemas in the US from October 22 to October 28, 2021,[5] and streamed on YouTube on November 21. The master used in this dub is the same master used on the WOWOW broadcast and Japanese Netflix.
  • Jigen is the first character in the series to call Zenigata "Pops".
