There were differences between the D2 Manga and the Tokyopop translation. While a majority of text is similar between the two with a difference in the words used but kept the same meaning, there are changes in terms of the dialogue and presentation.
- The D2 Manga translation has upper and lower case in the dialogue while in the Tokyopop translation and is standard in terms of comic books, all the text is in upper case.
- In the D2 Manga, Inspector Zenigata had become Lieutenant Zenigata.
- In the English Tokyopop translation, the times that Lupin went into the cell increased from 180 to 186. This might be because in the D2 Manga translation, it is mentioned that Lupin was arrested 186 times however 180 of those times he was in disguise. Tokyopop might have done this out of simplifying.
- The Tokyopop translation is more vulgar in terms of Zenigata. One example is "Ok, then. Where are Jigen and Goemon - the nuts to your dick?" while in the D2 manga translation this was just "Where are your cronies Goemon and Jigen?!". Ironically on Page 18, Zenigata says "I don't believe it!" in the Tokyopop translation while on the D2 Manga it is "Damn it!".
- The police officer in the D2 Manga translation says "Goemon and Jigen, Sir" when they come to the door while in the Tokyopop translation, he just says "You know 'em?".
- When Lupin, Jigen and Goemon arrive in the office where Zenigata was sat, they each have their own lines. Lupin - "Believe it!", Goemon - "Yes.", Jigen - "You bet." Due to text bubble size on the original source in the Tokyopop translation, this was changed so Lupin, Goemon and Jigen all saying "But... it... is...".
- In the D2 Manga translation, Zenigata goes into more detail "Lock-em up, I'll interrogate 'em tomorrow. I'll question them thoroughly, one by one!" however in the Tokyopop translation, this was just "Lock 'em up!" and "Not so funny now, isn't it?".
- While Zenigata was smoking and thinking, in the D2 Manga translation he just says "Nope, the computer is no help." while in the Tokyopop translation he adds "Computers can't think! You need a cop for that...".
- When the police officer caught Lupin, the D2 manga translation was inconsistent. The text says "Catch him!" but the voice over says "Gotcha!". The Tokyopop translation says "Stop him!"
- The D2 Manga just translated the name card to Kagi Gen despite the text later on saying Kagigen, the Tokyopop translation also translated his record.
- The D2 Manga translation simplified when Zenigata mentioned Kagi Gen, "Even the FBI wants his service.". Both the Japanese original and the Tokyopop translation, the CIA was mentioned as well.
- When Zenigata returns to the cell, in the D2 Manga translation the exchange goes Zenigata - "Everything ok?", Police Officer - "Yes sir!" while in the Tokyopop translation, Zenigata - "See anything...?", Police Officer - "No-thing sir.".
- As Zenigata found Lupin "gone" from his cell, in the Tokyopop translation he says "Put out an APB!!" (all points bulletin, an American term for information regarding a suspect). The D2 manga translation was inconsistent between "Block the exits!!" (text) and "Block the exit!" (voice).
- Detective Melon (or Meron as the D2 Manga called him) either calls Zenigata Lieutenant Zenigata or just his last name in the D2 Manga while in the Tokyopop translation, it is Zeni-baby or Zeni-san. As a note, in the Japanese original he calls Zenigata "Zeni-san."
- The D2 Manga had localized the sound effects to "RATATATA" when Lupin is drilling, "THUMP" when Lupin is banging on the cell and "CRASH" when the ceiling collapsed. The Tokyopop translation left this in Japanese.
Notes[]
- The chapter was first translated into English as one of the four manga chapters that appeared in Lupin III D2 Manga.
- The episode adapts the scene where Lupin gets arrested into a cell to let out a criminal, Kagi Gen was changed to Clyde Barrow. Detective Melon was dropped in the episode.
- For the D2 Manga PlayStation chapter, three panels between Melon and Zenigata were swapped around. In the original they were on Page 13 but it was moved to what would have been between Pages 13 and 14 in the animated manga.
