Lupin III Wiki

New Lupin III Chapter 3 is titled "Detective Melon".

Long Summary[]

Inspector Koichi Zenigata submits a resignation letter to the police chief. The chief lightly mocks his years of failure regarding capturing Lupin III, before ripping the letter apart. He tells him he needs a new approach and introduces Detective Melon, a smug cop with the uncanny ability to capture anyone and anything by throwing handcuffs at them, which he demonstrates by capturing a random police officer who came inside the office and freeing him afterwards.

The police officer delivers a file to the chief, who opens it and reveals its contents to Zenigata: it's Detective Melon's file. But there's something else: it looks like it was Lupin III who requested the background check on Melon. The chief reveals he'd long wanted to keep Melon a secret, and laughs at how Lupin's spoilt it. The police officer is about to leave the room until the chief notices something on the officer's back: a written insult to Melon, telling him he sucks, from Lupin.

The men wonder how the officer missed the message, and the officer angrily points out that other written messages from Lupin are in the room too: behind the officer's chair, behind Zenigata's coat, and on Melon's hat. He begins to angrily berates the men for being unable to figure out how that happened, which is observed by Daisuke Jigen from afar with a telescope. It turns out the police officer is Lupin III, and his goal all this time is to try and look at Melon up close.

Lupin, still disguised as an officer, now starts insulting Melon, but Melon pulls out a camera and snaps a picture of Lupin. The camera is revealed to be a laser camera designed to see through latex, which meant Melon had known it was Lupin in disguise after all. The camera prints out a photograph of Lupin without any disguise and Melon shows this to Zenigata, who is infuriated and was about to throw himself at Lupin, until Melon stops him and gives him a pair of binoculars to see where Jigen and Goemon Ishikawa XIII were positioned. Goemon exclaims that this plan sucked before Melon calmly closes the curtains. Goemon suggests shooting them through the windows, and Jigen says it's only possible if the lights were turned off.

Now exposed to the three men, Lupin states his intent: he came for Melon, whom he reveals to have killed an innocent boy during a confession, a case which the chief notes is closed. Lupin angrily tells Melon to go to hell and that he'd "kick his ass every step of the way", which Melon laughs at, asking how he'd escape. Lupin says his colleagues are on a rooftop across the street, and Melon says that's why he closed the curtain. He also turns out the lights "just in case", which turned out to be a bad move, because the ink Lupin used to write insulting messages on their backs was glow-in-the-dark ink that made them highly visible. The three men are shot with tranquilizer darts by Jigen, and as a last resort, Melon throws one of his handcuffs to Lupin's leg.

The plan is debatably successful, and the Lupin gang retreat to a hideout. Goemon is relieved it's over, while Lupin is annoyed that Detective Melon is still handcuffed to his leg.

Notes[]

  • In the anime adaptation, Detective Melon was replaced by Melon Ganimard. While the two are different, it shares some elements. In both, Zenigata gets a partner to work with called Melon, Lupin writes on peoples backs, Jigen uses the telescope to spy out and both Melons figured out that the officer is Lupin in disguise.
  • The resignation note that Zenigata gives to the Police Chief appeared in Part 1 Episode 23.
