Lupin III Wiki

Marciano is one of the main antagonists of the third Lupin III film, The Legend of the Gold of Babylon. After the death of his father, who tried and failed at finding the fabled treasure of Babylon, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps himself. Near the end of the film, Kowalski betrays him via poisoning him with his Flyswatter of Death and takes his place as the head mafioso.

History[]

After discovering Babylonian cuneiforms at a subway construction site under Madison Square Garden, Marciano's father washes his hands of the organized crime business and decides to search for a supposed Babylonian treasure, only for the excavation to be halted when Adolf Hitler shows up shortly after to search for the same thing that he was. When he passed, Marciano (referred to as 'Junior' by Kowalski) took it upon himself to find the treasure himself while also hoping to annihilate Lupin in the process. While searching, he gained the attention of Fujiko Mine, who pretends to be his girlfriend in order to find out more about the Babylonian gold. When "Fujiko" enters the underground museum, she mentions Lupin's name and is caught taking pictures of the cuneiforms, causing Marciano to angrily tear her bathrobe and stab who he believes to be Fujiko. When it turns out to be Lupin in disguise, he attempts to kill him, only to be put to sleep by him.

In the middle of the film when he finally arrives at an excavation site lead by Tartini, he and his henchmen surround a ruin that Lupin successfully infiltrated. After trying to obtain the gold that Lupin stole, which turned out to be a winged lion statue, Marciano was again found at a disadvantage when his henchmen couldn't act fast enough to try and shoot down Lupin flying away with the treasure on a kite.

After a couple of gunfights in the desert, Marciano finally steals back the 'treasure' from Fujiko's possession and abducts her, taking her back to his skyscraper in New York City. When he cherishes his treasure, Kowalski informs him that Lupin was back to steal it from him. Hearing this, he bursts into tears and cowers down next to the lion statue, crying out "Mama..." much to Fujiko's surprise.

When Lupin hears that Fujiko had been captured by Marciano, he once again infiltrates the hideout. It was at that moment that Kowalski announced his betrayal and killed Marciano, later dropping his body into an underground sewer along with Lupin and Fujiko.

Personality[]

Based on what is seen of him in the film, he's historically intelligent, somewhat unstable, vulnerable, and incredibly emotional when something either does or does not go his way. When he saw the Babylonian treasure that Lupin managed to steal from the ruin, he begins to cry as he hugs it, believing he finally accomplished what his father couldn't before he died.

Later, when he returns to New York with the lion statue, Kowalski notifies him that Lupin and his gang came back presumably to steal the treasure. After Lupin tells them off over the phone, he breaks down, fearing that the treasure he and his late father so desperately yearned for was going to be taken again. He then cries for his mother (who is not mentioned nor shown in the film prior or after), to which Kowalski sighs, muttering "again" hinting towards the fact that emotional outbursts aren't uncommon for Marciano.

Trivia[]

Despite having his name pronounced as "Mar-see-ah-no" in the English dubbing, his surname is Italian and would instead be pronounced as either "Mar-chee-ah-no" or "Mar-cha-no."

In the PC88 game, Marciano is betrayed by Kowalski, but instead chooses to cooperate with Lupin in his escape and even explains that he never wanted to be in the mafia in the first place. He was forced to, either by familial ties or his father himself. Afterwards, he leaves, warning Lupin of how terrifying Kowalski can be and that he has seen his ruthlessness first hand.
