"Lupin the Third Theme Song I", alternatively known as "Theme of Lupin III, I", is a song composed by Takeo Yamashita and performed by Charlie Kosei. The lyrics was written by Tokyo Movie Kikakubu.[1] It was used as the first opening theme of Lupin the 3rd Part 1.
This theme was originally called "Lupin the Third Part 2" by Union/Teichiku record. Later it was changed by Asahi Sonorama and Columbia to "Lupin the Third Theme Song I".[2][3]
It was reduced to just being insert music in Lupin Zero, with its opening sting being used for surprise moments every now and then in the ONA. There exists no version with vocals in the ONA's soundtrack.

Until the release of Lupin the Third Box Part II and later soundtracks such as Lupin the Third Special Chronicle 40th Anniversary Lupin the Best, this was the version that was used in soundtracks.[4][5]

The original vocal version by Charie Corsey was released on December 1971 on the B-side within the Lupin the Third vinyl as "Lupin the Third Part 2".[1] One year later, this song is include in the vinyl that contains the original drama from Part 1 Episode 2 as "Theme Song Lupin the Third Part 1".[2] After that, this song reappears in multiple compilation such as:

- The song was originally called Lupin the Third Song (ルパン・ザ・サードの歌 Rupan Za Sādo no Uta?). The original record soundtrack by Teichiku Records called the song Lupin III Part 2 then it was changed to Lupin III Part 1 when it was published by Asahi Sonorama and Columbia. According to the linear notes from Lupin the Third The 1st Series Anthology, until 1998 the opening theme songs and Afro Lupin '68 weren't registered in JASRAC, so Yomiuri TV registered them as "Lupin Theme Song"
- This is the "only" Lupin III media links Koji Makaino as arranger of "Lupin III Part 1-2" record version.[1]
- Due to the show's troubled production, this opening used footage from the 1969 Pilot Film.[8]
