Note by Lupin III.

The chapter starts with a notice wrote by Lupin III to celebrate the one-year of publishing his stories in Weekly Manga Action.

It's been over a year since I first appeared in this 'Weekly Manga Action' magazine. I would like to reveal my strange and mysterious past here. In all honesty, I'm not sure the year and day I was born. All I really know is that my grandfather was from France and his name was Arsène Lupin. I also recall that he took his last breath when I was just 15 years old. The following are my interim confessions.

Synopsis[]

Lupin III, the world's greatest thief, is currently away for now on holiday. But in order to keep the reader occupied, he left behind a story telling about something that happened when he was still much younger, and when his grandfather Arsène Lupin was still alive. For clarity, the original Arsène Lupin will only be called Arsène for the remainder of this synopsis.

A sick and bedridden Arsène, surrounded by numerous half-naked women, calls out to a young Lupin III, saying he's going to live forever no matter what and asks him if he's ready to challenge him. Lupin III originally refuses, citing his grandfather's old age as a reason, until some hands beat him up and force him to comply.

A reluctant and beaten-up Lupin III asks what the challenge is, and Arsène points at a building outside the window, saying that it has 10 rooms and that the Lupin clan has had that building as a training facility Lupin III has one hour to go through every room and come back alive, with his reward being Arsène's entire estate. But as he prepares to go to the building, Arsène forces him to blindly sign a contract.

The moment Lupin III signed the contract and left the room, Arsène calls out to an old man in the corner, who begs to have his son back. Arsène merely dismisses his pleas by having bricks fall on him and saying that all he really needed was money and women. Surrendering to Arsène, he gets forced to sign a contract as well.

Lupin III, meanwhile, is now outside the building Arsène ordered him to go. As he's about to open the entrance, he gets ambushed by someone with a gun. The two fight, until the ambusher traps Lupin III's head on the floor with a pitchfork. He openly expresses that he doesn't want to go back to jail, to which Lupin III replies that he knows he's that escaped murderer named Riggs, whom he read in the contract his grandfather gave to him. Lupin III presses a button hidden somewhere, which makes the ground collapse from where Riggs is standing on. Riggs falls down, where a spiky trap in the bottom eventually causes his demise.

Alive and well, Lupin III returns to Arsène's room, where he asks about Riggs. Lupin III learns that the reason Arsène sent him to the building in the first place was because he knew Riggs was hiding there, infuriating Lupin III. But before he could do anything, Arsène expresses relief by saying he'll live either way, and shows Lupin III the two contracts that he and the old man from before had signed. It states that if Lupin III or Riggs dies, their heart will be transplanted to Arsène, revealing that the old man from before was actually Riggs' father.

Notes[]

  • When collected in tankōbon (単行本?) volumes, it became the 37th chapter.
  • The original Weekly Manga Action issue categorized this as the first chapter of the Confession Series however when it was collected into volumes, this was dropped. While it kept the same order, it was moved earlier into the manga.[1]
