Lupin III Chapter 5 is titled "Operation Epic Fail".
Synopsis[]
In a break from his usual activities, Lupin is approached by the Japanese government to rescue a spy—Agent 0035—from the brutal police state of Shiana. Though annoyed with their cloak-and-dagger methods (such as a self-detonating briefing tape), he accepts.
Working tirelessly, Lupin infiltrates the Shianese compound holding Agent 0035, kills several of the sentries, and disguises himself in one of their uniforms. Several of the still-uniformed corpses (apparently stiffened on their feet) are then returned to their posts; to further the illusion, Lupin plants miniature speakers in their teeth, allowing him (with a mini-microphone installed in his own teeth) to "speak" through their mouths when necessary.
Soon after, the compound is entered by a quartet of Shianese officials: the commissar of secret police, his chief interrogator, a hospital doctor, and the beautiful Captain Koushutai, who is to prosecute Agent 0035's impending trial. Captain Koushutai quickly becomes suspicious when a stray lizard crawls up one of the corpses' faces, but relents when Lupin makes the corpse "excuse" the lizard as a pet. Subsequently, the four head off to their respective offices, unaware they are leading Lupin to Agent 0035's cell.
Finding Agent 0035 alive despite the police's brutal torture, Lupin deploys a special gas grenade. Hours later, the commissar and his interrogator wake up to find their voices gone; as Agent 0035's trial hinges on their spoken testimony, they demand help from the doctor, who performs a quick surgery that apparently restores their voices.
Shockingly, the two officials give testimony at the trial that completely exonerates Agent 0035, allowing him to leave Shiana of his own free will. As a humiliated Captain Koushutai demands explanation, she finds herself cornered by the doctor, who slowly reveals himself to be Lupin in disguise; after deploying his voice-paralyzing gas on the two officials, he had used the "surgery" to plant his mini-speakers in their teeth, ensuring they could only "say" whatever he said.
His assignment completed, Lupin quickly overpowers Captain Koushutai and forces himself on her, all the while play-acting her consent through a spare speaker.

Notes[]
- This chapter primarily parodies the 1966 Mission: Impossible series (which Japan had imported shortly before the manga began publication), hence the unusual plot of Lupin engaging in espionage on behalf of a national government.
- The English Tokyopop title makes the parody explicit.
- "Shiana" is an obvious parody of the People's Republic of China, a popular antagonist for contemporary spy stories (especially those set in Asia).
- This is the first chapter to be collected out-of-order in reprints, as tankōbon (単行本?) volumes traditionally have it as the sixth chapter.
- Per the original magazine order, this is the first chapter to not feature Inspector Zenigata (a status held by "Suspense Zone" in the tankōbon ordering).
