Joseph Malkovich was a character from Stolen Lupin - The Copy Cat is a Midsummer's Butterfly.

Character History

Malkovich was a former mob boss who broke out of Alcatraz as he heard rumors about the Bulls Eye jewel, however apart from that, not much was known about him. It was known that he had a butler called Dorcrus and henchmen working for him. He enjoyed having a smoke with his preferred brand being Gauloises. For much of the TV Special, he hides his appearance often appearing in the shadows or partly covered.

When Lupin III ended up being trapped in the container with the treasure falling down, Malkovich sent two of his henchmen in their planes to grab the balloon to take him to his hideout in Paris. Lupin was handcuffed and only wearing his boxer shorts, as he saw a red light he says that he should be treated more gently if he wants to see his dinner show, Malkovich however doesn't want to enjoy his dinner while watching, Lupin asks what he wants while saying that he was rude for not showing his face. Malkovich orders Lupin to steal the Bulls Eye who claims to be harder than diamonds and more beautiful than emeralds since it is a one of a kind jewel. Lupin informs Malkovich that anyone who tried to steal the jewel ended up with mysterious deaths. Having a smoke, he ignored Lupin's advice and wants him to steal it before tomorrow. Lupin asked him whether he was crazy but he replied "of course not" and shows a picture to Lupin that the jewel is displayed at the Grand Bateau Museum. While Lupin knows that it is a challenge, Malkovich also knows that nothing is impossible for him however he did not wanted to be ordered.

After saying that Lupin is timid, Malkovich shows him a video feed of Fujiko Mine being kidnapped that caused him to fall down, he also tells Lupin that he put a necklace on her as she said that she was sorry for being caught. Lupin comments that the necklace was "ugly". Dorcrus shows an example of the necklace on a cast that caused it to explode after pressing a button. Malkovich says that Fujiko will end up like that if Lupin doesn't obey his order, mentions about leaving Fujiko in the lion's den and then laughs as he switched off the screen in darkness. Lupin agreed and was sent to the Grand Bateau Museum while contacting Daisuke Jigen.

While Lupin was driving safely in his Alfa Romeo 2300 Touring 1932, he contacts Malkovich who says that he is impressed but also mentions that it is chaotic with the police and Interpol. He also tells Lupin to keep hold of the jewel for while until he had figured out the police movement for an opportunity to give him the Bulls Eye, Lupin says that he is "careful". Malkovich gave his phone to Fujiko so Lupin could hear her voice however he was interrupted. Becky Lambert in a gyrocopter stole the Bulls Eye from him with a claw and flew away, she also caused Lupin to fall off the car and into a garbage truck.

After Lupin steals the Bulls Eye from a hotel safe along with about €10 million, Malkovich contacts him and says that in two hours bring the jewel to the Champs-Elysees in exchange for Fujiko. Lupin and Jigen arrive at the meeting point waiting in the car until Malkovich contacted Lupin saying to give the Bulls Eye to Dorcrus who was outside the car. Lupin asks him about Fujiko however she was in the black car opposite as Malkovich sat next to her who was tied up and Hakuryū at the back seat. He ordered Dolcurs to get the jewel. After saying "don't be rough on Fujiko", Lupin gives Dorcrus the Bulls Eye and heads towards the car, it turned out that Fujiko was with Malkovich with the kidnapping was fake as she gave Lupin a kiss then a wave and they drove off.

Malkovich returned to his office tapping on the fish tank, Dorcrus informs him about Becky, he knew that she was Catherine's daughter. While Zenigata was with Brian Murphy, he noticed a scent of Gauloises even though Murphy does not smoke, Murphy ended up sniffing his own brand new suit and it was revealed that it was Lupin in disguise to get more information. Even though it was not shown, Murphy and Malkovich had a meeting. Looking at a map of Paris, Malkovich stubbed out his cigarette annoyed that Lupin is taking so long to give him the Bulls Eye, since Fujiko gave him a fake while Becky had the real gem. He was annoyed at Fujiko thinking that it was his intent to lure him due to that the Bulls Eye had inside a micro transmitting device tracked down by a satellite. Fujiko pointed her gun for Malkovich to explain everything.

Malkovich tells Fujiko about "The Lupin Collection" who she hasn't heard of its existence, according to him a collection of stolen artworks and treasures that he stored somewhere. The value when combined is astronomical and he wanted all of it. They smile to each other knowing that they were going to team up to find the collection as Fujiko puts her gun back down her thigh. Afterward he sent his henchmen to look for Becky.

While having his dinner, Malkovich and Dorcrus discuss that they are using Fujiko to trick Lupin into finding the Lupin Collection. Dolcurs says that she will betray Malkovich to get the collection herself however he knows and says that he is not as stupid as getting tricked by her.

He fed his fish with the leftover steak when Becky goes all the way to his office with Hakuryū however when she wasn't looking, Hakuryū grabbed and put her to the floor while her gun was dropped. Malkovich says that she has courage as Becky asked him whether he killed her mother, he didn't say and fired a sleeping dart at Becky. The tracker in the Bulls Eye managed to find the location of Lupin and Fujiko as he threw the gun into the fish tank. Becky was put at the back of his car and along with the henchmen drove to Mosquito Village. On the way there Dorcrus lit a lighter as Malkovich smoked his cigarette.

They arrived at Mosquito Village as Malkovich got out of the car and saying that the village is the Lupin Collection. Fujiko was outside with Lupin as she had a gun towards him. Malkovich claimed that it was impressive as Lupin asked him whether he would fall in love with him again using the same line that he told Fujiko earlier. He told Lupin that before he falls to bid him farewell however he will look after the Lupin Collection. Again, he says that it was impressive and laughed. Just as Fujiko was about to move to shoot Lupin, Malkovich knows that she will betray him and told her to stay there as a henchman pointed a gun towards her and explains what he knows what she would do. Lupin laughed and Malkovich asked what was funny, he replied that he never seriously dated a girl. He laughed back calling it absurd. Lupin explains about his relationship with Fujiko, he also tells Malkovich that he was lured there as he knew all along regarding the plan and scratched his nose. With a nod, he ordered Hakuryū to flick pellets at Lupin but was saved by Goemon Ishikawa XIII.

Malkovich witnessed Goemon agreeing to take on Hakuryū and likewise the same for Jigen taking down the other henchman with the machine gun. He said that the Lupin family is here however Jigen corrected by mentioning that they are not like that and Goemon agreeing with him saying that they are "rotten friends at best". Lupin also adds that they are really nasty with Fujiko agreeing with Lupin. Malkovich thanked them for the invitation as the rest of his henchmen came down afterwards. While Lupin, Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko deal with the henchmen, Malkovich has a smoke and later picked up Fujiko's earrings.

Lupin asks Malkovich whether he is alone, he then shows Lupin the back of his car with Becky however she was awake now wearing a necklace. It was planted along with Fujiko's to set off an explosion. Becky says sorry to Lupin as she pointed the gun at him, he give her the advice of being gentle before firing and she fired. Lupin walked towards her knowing something was wrong as she stood there while Malkovich was having a smoke. She fired again, apologizing to him and her mother but this time she shot Lupin.

Brian Murphy had arrived in his car and Malkovich gave him the detonator. Malkovich claimed that Catherine was a fine woman and was about to tell Murphy about the Bulls Eye. He was then murdered by Murphy who betrayed him with his plan to set him up for the crimes related to the Bulls Eye, Murphy also planted the Walther P38 that he used and dropped it on the ground to make it look like a shootout between Malkovich and Lupin. His last words were "Mother fu..." however he died before he was able to finish.

Notes

• Malkovich smoked the French brand Gauloises due to Jean Gabin had smoked them [1] , Lupin however smokes the rival brand Gitanes. In the English fan translation, the actor's name is Jean Gavan due to the translators unaware of the connection.
• The idea of Malkovich putting an explosive device and showing an example was also done by Ginko Hoshikage and George Marshall however he only did it for Fujiko rather than Lupin.
