Lupin goes to see a psychiatrist about a number of crimes committed under his name. He insists he's innocent, The psychiatrist informs him his fingerprints were found at the scene of the crime, although he says that with the latest technology, it's possible that they were faked. After another murder is committed, Lupin goes to see him again and, declaring he'll catch the impostor, storms out in a rage. He then shows Jigen and Goemon footage of Lupin transforming into an evil-looking man. They promise to keep an eye on Lupin and leave. Once they're gone, his accomplice emerges and congratulates him. Lupin sees footage of himself murdering a girl he had sex with and visits the psychiatrist once more. He tells him that he has a severe illness which causes him to change at midnight. Disturbed and depressed, Lupin leaves. The psychiatrist shows Jigen and Goemon footage of Lupin transforming into a woman, then pretends to turn into a woman himself, which causes Jigen and Goemon to flee in terror. He shows footage of Lupin transforming into the Fake Lupin and diving out a window to Zenigata. He plots with the Lupin impostor to rob a museum, not knowing that Lupin had been spying on them and has learned the truth. Lupin tricks Zenigata into arresting the psychiatrist and his accomplice using film inserted into the inspector's binoculars.

Anime[]

Dr. Nomil is a psychiatrist. His subordinate is Fake Lupin who he uses to set up Lupin III in a gaslighting scam to get as much money as they can.

Nomil approaches Daisuke Jigen and Goemon Ishikawa XIII outside a cafe, introduces himself as Lupin II's best friend, and offers to see Lupin about the crimes committed in his name.

Lupin goes to Nomil's house, where the psychiatrist offers him a glass of scotch. He goes into the study next door and tells Jigen and Goemon to come out from behind the curtain. He tells them to look at the "one-way mirror" that Lupin doesn't know that this is the start of an "experiment". Conspicuously, he notes the time is midnight, the time when Fugo and Zenial were murdered. They see a video of Lupin clutching his throat, doubling over and turning into Fake Lupin.

Nomil claims that Lupin has Disguise Syndrome. He explains that it is an illness that causes his face and personality to change at a certain time of the day and compared it to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Jigen asks him whether Lupin killed Fugo and Zenial. Nomil claims he cannot say otherwise and says that it is not his fault. He tells them that the characteristic of Disguise Syndrome is that the person is unaware of the condition, and that it is best to leave Lupin with him. He tells Jigen and Goemon to go back to the hotel, so they leave.

After Jigen and Goemon leave, Nomil's accomplice, the Lupin impostor, pulls out the projector and laughs about how easy it was to fool the two. Nomil, who had spiked Lupin's scotch, goes into the front room with his accomplice. The two crooks observe the sleeping Lupin sprawled over the coffee table. He announces that Step 1 of his plan was done; Fake Lupin was willing to do Step 2.

After he sees disturbing footage of him transforming and killing a woman, Lupin returns to Nomil's house and the video again. He finds it horrifying and has no idea that his condition has gotten worse. Nomil gravely explains to Lupin about Disguise Syndrome. He claims that he wanted to cure him but he was not sure whether he was able to do it. Lupin leaves in a deep depression. After Lupin left, Fake Lupin gloats that even the cunning Lupin has been taken in with their scam. Nomil then says that no matter what he does, Lupin will be blamed for the crimes.

At the ICPO headquarters, he showed Koichi Zenigata and Interpol staff the tape of Fake Lupin's crimes. Zenigata was surprised that he had changed and asked him whether it was really him. Nomil tells Zenigata that his condition will get worse and tells him the amount of victims will increase. He insists Zenigata must stop Lupin.

At a cafe, Fake Lupin asks the doctor how he went at his trip to ICPO Headquarters and wondered whether he convinced Zenigata. Nomil confirms this. Fake Lupin brags that Lupin is definitely bound for the guillotine. Nomil suggests that Fake Lupin's face to be surgically altered to complete the plan as they can live their lives in luxury. He is unaware that Lupin is spying on him from the next table.

At Dr. Nomil's house, Zenigata arrives with Lupin, who is disguised as Nomil. He looks into a pair of binoculars and sees what appears to be Jigen and Lupin transform into Nomil and the Lupin impostor. Thinking they have Disguise Syndrome he arrests them, not realizing that Lupin had beat Nomil at his own game by inserting film into Zenigata's binoculars.

Notes[]

  • The English Tokyopop translation of the manga gave his name as Professor Hamlet. He is nameless in the Japanese original and the Italian translation as the line that mentions his name was rewritten in the English translation as originally it mentioned "Lupin" and no mention of Hamlet in any form.
  • In bloopers for a live read of the episode at a convention, Zenigata calls him "Dickhead" and a "penis with ears".
