Lupin III Wiki

Lupin Gang[]

Lupin the Third[]

In the original manga series, Jigen is simply henchman #1. His character is not developed as much as it is in the anime and he is not as loyal to Lupin and even tries to kill him on several occasions, although by Chapter 23 he's already following Lupin to the North Pole. In the anime, he and Lupin are best friends and partners. In the second manga series and beyond, Jigen becomes more like his anime counterpart.

He cares deeply for Lupin and frequently gets upset whenever something bad happens to him; in Part 1 Episode 13 he breaks down in tears when he thinks Lupin has been sent to the Fourth Dimension. When Lupin shows up alive and well seconds later, Jigen gets angry at him for scaring him. He does get annoyed whenever Lupin does something immature, but for the most part he's happy and comfortable to be in his company, particularly in The Castle of Cagliostro where the two of them spend a whole year together without Goemon or Fujiko.

A few times he remarks that whenever Lupin isn't stealing, he's rather lazy.

In the German dub of Part 1, he affectionately calls Lupin "gürkchen" ("pickle").

In Part 5 Episode 2, when he reacts to accusations of being Lupin's lover, instead of reacting with bewilderment or mild disgust, he becomes extremely flustered and vehemently insists that he and Lupin are just coworkers.

The Woman Called Fujiko Mine portrays their relationship as having a rough start as they try to kill each other over an Alexandrite jewel they both tried to steal from a pyramid. They started to duel once they escaped, but called it off until another day. Jigen is later surprised to find that Lupin saved him when he was in trouble; Lupin admitted he wasn't going to but Jigen looked "so clumsy" that he pitied the former gangster.

Goemon Ishikawa XIII[]

In the manga, he and Goemon don't have much of a relationship, other than they both work for Lupin and are often trying to kill him. In the anime, however, they have a much deeper relationship. Goemon considers Jigen a fellow warrior even though he uses firearms rather than a sword, Goemon respects Jigen a great deal as the gunman has been shown to be able to hold his own against the samurai.

Fujiko Mine[]

Jigen doesn't trust Fujiko as far as he can throw her. In Part III Episode 19, he even stands by while she's assaulted by prison inmates, and doesn't help her until the last second.

Though there is a heavy mutual dislike between the two, Jigen and Fujiko have been shown to get along on certain occasions, sharing a pseudo brother and sister-like relationship. In Bye-Bye Liberty - Close Call!, they celebrate together after Lupin and Michael save the world and casually chat about Goemon going to Alaska while Lupin furiously tried to hack into a police database. In Part V episode 6, the two bonded for days over a common shared interest; torturing Lupin.

His meeting with Fujiko in The Woman Called Fujiko Mine inspired him to take on a life of robbery, although he saw her for who she really was when she pitted him against Lupin.

One of the few times he showed he cared about her was when he saved her from Mamo in The Mystery of Mamo, although it was likely he did it for Lupin's sake. Another was when he protected her from an explosion in Part 1 Episode 8.

Koichi Zenigata[]

Jigen's reaction to Zenigata generally varies between amusement and disdain. His goodwill towards him varies. In Part 2 Episode 44 he encourages Lupin to save him when he's suffocating. However, in Part 2 Episode 82 he tells Lupin he's under no obligation to save Zenigata from the terrorists, and in Part III Episode 16 he tells Lupin not to bother saving him from the sharks (but he ends up doing so anyway).

When he and his gang are cornered by Zenigata, Jigen will prepare to shoot him, but inevitably, the danger passes or Lupin de-escalates the situation.

He has few moments of genuine kindness towards Zenigata, such as in Part 2 Episode 69 wherein he smiled knowingly after Zenigata told the gang that Laura was a widow, displaying that he does wish for the inspector's happiness. At the end of the episode, he offers his condolences to him about Laura's death and gives him a lift.

Furthermore, he's the first character in the anime series to call Zenigata "Tottsan".

Other[]

In spite of his mirust of women, Jigen won't hesitate to help out out a desperate woman in need, such as Sandra in Part 2 Episode 159.

Angelica[]

While he was still in the mob and on the run, he met a rich woman named Angelica in Venice. He stole and crashed her car while making a getaway. The two had a relationship. Angelica wanted to marry Jigen, but he got cold feet and left her. They met again in the country of Borodias, where Angelica has become a nun. She and Jigen tried as hard as they could to protect the hospital, but it was destroyed. Angelica, distraught, searched the rubble for any survivors. This scared Jigen out of his mind and he tried to warn her that there may be unexploded bombs around. Angelica failed to listen and accidentally stepped on one. She was then killed in the explosion. Jigen mourned for her like he did for no other woman, as she was one of the few good women he ever knew. After she was avenged, Jigen laid flowers at her grave.

Monica (Part 2 Episode 58)[]

While separated from Lupin in Russia, Jigen developed a relationship with a ballet dancer named Monica. He believed her to be a refugee and helped her escape from the Soviet Union. However, he didn't realize she was using him to smuggle a stolen diamond, which she had hidden in the cast his injured arm was wrapped in. By the time he found out, he had no hard feelings towards her and let her keep the diamond, since she saved his life twice.

Karen Korinsky[]

Despite having shot her father, Jigen and Karen shared a brief romance on board the submarine, Ivanoff, despite their wide age gap. This ended tragically; Karen was killed by Keith in a gunfight with him. He felt guilt over killing Karen's father and dared her to kill him, but on the third and fourth times she refused. As with Angelica, he mourned for her when she died.

Cicciolina[]

Possibly his first lover and the root of his distrust of women. Before Cicciolina's murder of her husband (and as such Jigen's loss of contact with her), they shared a deep romance, and Jigen had stopped her committing suicide at least once. Jigen's magnum was previously owned by Cicciolina's husband (he had taken the weapon to frame himself for the murder).

Joe of Spades[]

Joe was one of the first people to teach Jigen to use a gun, and one of Jigen's trusted friends. Unfortunately, in Part 2 Episode 84, Joe used Jigen to his own advantage.
