Brian Murphy is a character from Stolen Lupin - The Copy Cat is a Midsummer's Butterfly.

Character History

Murphy was a chief inspector in the Special Investigation Unit of Interpol who does not like smoking and was corrupt. He was involved with the mysterious murders linked to the Bulls Eye jewel including Catherine Lambert. This was due to that the Bulls Eye had inside a micro transmitting device tracked down by a satellite, he was able to track the victims down and kill them.

In a Paris police station, one of the officers introduced him to Koichi Zenigata. He opened the door and shook his hand with Zenigata whose hand was swollen due to having trapped with a laptop earlier, he said that it was a honor to meet the person who was exclusively on the Lupin III case. Murphy knew that he was close of capturing Lupin and that he will get him next time. Zenigata however says that Lupin was stolen and was surprised.

After Lupin stole the Bulls Eye from the Grand Bateau Museum, Murphy told Zenigata and he was not sure. He says that there were witnesses and Zenigata thought that Lupin was not kidnapped after all. Becky Lambert then stole the Bulls Eye and Murphy looked her up. According to Interpol her real name was Rebecca Lambert who was wanted for an artwork theft, her methods were the same that Lupin used 17-18 years ago. He thought that she was a copycat thief and Zenigata thought that she was the one who kidnapped Lupin, yet since she is a thief he thought that she sided with him. As Zenigata works it out, he offered Murphy a packet of Shinsei cigarettes but he tells him that it is a non smoking room and is concerned over his suit getting worried. Zenigata apologized even though Murphy advised him to stop smoking, he then tells Murphy that arresting Becky is the key to arresting Lupin.

Even though it was not shown, Murphy and Joseph Malkovich had a meeting with each other at an unknown location but he returned to the Interpol offices. Zenigata was researching on a computer when Murphy called his name in an affectionate way and he thought that he went back to Japan. The inspector vows to find Lupin as he knows that he is around somewhere and wouldn't retreat, he was looking for the Bulls Eye incidents but there was no information. Murphy did not tell him that the records were erased and acted surprised, Zenigata tells him that anyone who steals the Bulls Eye gets killed. He laughed and lied claiming that the Bulls Eye has never been stolen, he also claims that the FBI and Scotland Yard have no information denouncing them as rumors. As Zenigata had a hunch about the truth, Murphy grumbled back saying about doubting people in the inside and claimed to be impossible. Zenigata shrugged it off and asked him whether he smoked Gauloises, Murphy shouted because he had told him before that he doesn't smoke, he claimed that his memory was playing up and noticed a scent of Gauloises. Murphy ended up sniffing his own brand new suit and Zenigata left. Another Zenigata had arrived asking about the incidents but he tells him that he already looked them up. Murphy wondered who it was, it was revealed that the Zenigata that had left was Lupin in disguise to get more information.

Later Murphy gave Zenigata a photo of Malkovich and told him about his past, he says when he was in Alcatraz was when the rumors of the Bulls Eye started. Zenigata wondered whether Malkovich was involved and Murphy tells him that his records were also erased as he didn't want Interpol's reputation to be lost while sipping his cup. As Zenigata got annoyed, the cup of coffee was spilled onto the photo and was trying to mop it up. Murphy tells him that he was secretly investigating the matter himself, Zenigata then asked whether it was true and he confirmed it as he knows where Malkovich is. He then congratulated Murphy while saying that he was spaced out and ended up having a coffee stain on his suit, Zenigata tried to remove it as he believed that Malkovich was involved with Lupin too.

Murphy had arrived to Mosquito Village in his car and Malkovich gave him the detonator, saying that he used Catherine. Malkovich claimed that Catherine was a fine woman and was about to tell Murphy about the Bulls Eye that was a "cursed jewel". Murphy then shot Malkovich who betrayed him with his plan to set him up for the crimes related to the Bulls Eye, he then wiped the Walther P38 with a cloth saying that a betrayal was between two people who had a trusting relationship and that he hated those Gauloises that he smoked. He also planted the Walther P38 that he used and dropped it on the ground to make it look like a shootout between Malkovich and Lupin while wiping his hands with a cloth. Murphy then declared "The Lupin Collection" to be his own.

Entering one of the houses with Becky, he went insane while looking at the paintings saying that he loves the Lupin Collection calling it wonderful and that no other treasure can compare. He noticed Van Gogh, Da Vinci and Michelangelo while saying that it was "mine" and Lupin is the best thief in the world. Becky says that they are too good for him but he says that she was just like her mother, he also believes that Becky has a stupid sense of justice. She knew that he had killed Catherine and he wanted to do the same with Becky.

Suddenly the ground shook and the treasures fell down as Lumberjack was firing at the village, he dashed to the window seeing the destruction worrying about the treasures. Becky says that the treasures would rather be destroyed than it was for Murphy to have them. Just as he told her to shut up, he saw a tank coming his way and went out of the house screaming about the paintings and the value of the collection. Lupin came out of the house repeating what Becky had said and was shocked that Lupin was still alive. Becky then fired the gun that turned out to be a prop gun as he coward away, she says that it was empty and they tricked him. Being annoyed, he reminded them that Becky had an explosive necklace on and Lupin urged him to try it.

Murphy tried the detonator however it had no affect, Fujiko Mine from behind tells him that she hacked Malkovich's computer and he was angry knowing that she disabled the program. After being annoyed by them, Murphy pulled out his gun but Daisuke Jigen threw his magnum causing them to fall to the ground and told him to give up. Murphy then goes to get his gun but Goemon Ishikawa XIII used his Zantetsuken causing it to disintegrate, then when Goemon puts the sword into the pouch Murphy's clothes were ripped leaving him only in his boxer shorts. Lupin reminds Becky not to have her revenge as he was not worth the trouble. Murphy begged Lupin to make a deal to remove his records from the Interpol database, however Lupin pointed his gun at him saying that he doesn't care about Interpol. Then he bargained with the collection that Lupin claims to find it himself.

As Zenigata called for Lupin, he laughed and saying to Lupin that he lost. Lupin says that he wasn't very convincing since he screamed while looking pathetic. Murphy shouted for Zenigata and tried to run away but Lupin fired a tranquilizer dart at his butt causing him to fall asleep. Lupin then put a face mask of himself on Murphy and tied him up while he was asleep.

When he woke up thinking that he has another chance of getting the collection, he saw Zenigata and the police doing their investigation to search the bodies of Malkovich and his henchmen. Zenigata pointed at him thinking that he was Lupin while ordering the other officers to find Jigen and Goemon. He fell down and saw a reflection of Lupin, he then sat back up. Zenigata looked and told him that there was a new record on Interpol describing Murphy's crimes, he called Murphy a scumbag for disgracing Interpol and unforgivable. The inspector walked away getting someone to look after him but thought that he was going to say something, he just shook his head. Zenigata ran back and scratched his face wondering whether he was Lupin as he was caught too easily and walked behind him. Murphy claimed that he was Lupin while the real Lupin disguised as a police officer points towards his neck and Zenigata pulled the string removing the mask knowing who he was.

The police came to arrest him and took him in a police van, he thought that he was Lupin and not Murphy. He is currently in prison for 850 years.
